Tunisia | Third Country Most Visited in Africa with Strategic Plans for a Successful 2025

Tunisia, a country in North Africa in the Maghreb region, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and containing in trs territory the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert, consolidated itself as the third country most visited in Africa with in addition strategic plans for a successful 2025.

The country is well known to boast a rich historical and cultural heritage symbolized by by the iconic archaeological sites of Carthage, ruins of an emblematic city founded in the the 9th century BC, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, and characterized by ancient architecture, suggestive souks, lively spice markets, vibrant towns with bustling spice markets and artisans’ workshops surrounded by olive groves, a land scented with jasmine and cool sea breezes and stunning, long beaches that all together bewitch a multitude of visitors.

The North African country welcomed 10.25 million visitors in 2024 marking an increase of 9.4% compared to the previous year according to the data provided by Business Insider Africa, well known leading pan - African innovative business news provider targeting aspirational business leaders, featuring the latest innovation, technology, and business news from the African continent alongside features on lifestyle, statistics, figures, markets and more verticals.

In the ranking of the most visited countries in Africa, Tunisia is only behind two other North African nations such as Morocco and Egypt, and the data provided highlighted that European citizens accounted for up to 29% of the total number of tourists received in the country, registering an increase of 16.9% with French visitors standing out as the first in 2024 signing 1.078.221 entries and growing by 6.2% followed in the ranking by German tourists, accounting for 329.243 visitors,with an increase of 8.7%. 

Concerning other markets, tourists from Maghreb countries accounted for 55.6% of arrivals while the arrivals from the Middle Est maintained some stability, with some 50.000 visitors registered.

This strong tourism recovery surpassed pre - pandemic levels, a high performance due to an excellent air connectivity, a superb offer of a notable network of comfortable hotels, resorts and apartments, a solid promotion of the destination abroad with participation to relevant tourism trade fairs and next to the consolidation of the traditional tourism based on cultural tours and beach holidays, a diversification of the tourist products.

The country is shifting its focus towards “alternative tourism” encouraging visitors with captivating offerings to explore areas beyond the beach, including hiking, biking, adventure tourism, wellness retreats, eco – tourism ad cultural activities in destinations less known attracting a good number of niche markets.

With a continuation concerning the aformentioned diverse tourism offerings and boosting air connectivity with major European markets   the ONTT, the National Tourist Office of Tunisia also planned a bold and dynamic promotional strategy for 2025, focusing on sustainable tourism programs and showcasing Tunisia as a global hotspot, aiming to attract this year over 11 million tourists.
