Greece and Cyprus two countries in the Mediterranean basin sharing strong historical, cultural and linguistic ties, throughout history, Greek settlers migrated to Cyprus, leading to the island becoming heavinly Hellenized, with in addition enhancing their brotherhood in the modern era when Greece has given full support to Cyprus's memberhip in the European Union are deepening a bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector focusing on joint initiatives and strategic plans.
In a meeting which took place in the capital of Greece, Athens, the Greek Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, met the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Cyprus, Kostas Koumis to discuss the development of joint travel packages, a strategic plan that is aimed at long - haul markets such as China and the United States of America attracting tourists from East Asia and North America with several proposals in the attractive destinations of both countries.
Other plans of collaboration focus on the exchange of best practices in tourism legislation including short-term rentals, the management of the flow of visitors, the extension of the season and the expansion of tripartite cooperation in the region in general.
In addition, both countries intend to promote initiatives on the development of sustainable tourism and address the impact of climate change on the sector and furthermore to improve coordination with the ministers of both countries.
The two nations agreed to establish a bilateral cooperation committee with the Greek side led by the Secretary of the Ministry, Vasia Koutsoukou, while the Cypriot side will be represented by the Director General of the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Costas Costantinou.
As additional note Cyprus is interested in participating in the Observatory of Coastal and Marine Tourism in the Medterranean, an initiative led by Greece which boasts a research and monitoring centre that analyses data on tourism, with also the goal to support sustainable tourism development in the Mediterranean area.
During the meeting the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Cyprus also pledged the country's support for Greece's candidacy for the post of Secretary - General of the UN Tourism, the United Nations World Tourism Organization represented by former Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis confirming in addition Cyprus support for the renewal of its seat on the Executive Board of UN Tourim.
At the European Union level, discussions explored potential synergies between the two countries in terms of tourism policy, ahead of Cyprus's presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026.
