Colombia, a leading destination in South America, well known for its rich cultural and historical heritage, a stunning biodiversity, diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, excellent gastronomy, adventures and pristine beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines is also emerging in romance tourism, a strategic segment with a remarkable expansion and a significant economic impact in the country.
Romance tourism refers to travel experiences centered around romantic relationships, often involving seeking romantic connections or celebrating existing one, this can include romantic getaways, honeymoons, marriage proposals, weddings, vow renewals with tailor made trips specifically designed for different tastes.
Over the last decade this kind of tourism in Colombia has become more important in its demand by international visitors, it energizes the offer of the products of a destination and generate stimuli to extend the time of stay of travellers between 4 and 6 days.
With a combination of landscapes, spirituality, idyllic sites, secluded beaches, a delicious cuisine, romantic retreats, the South American country attracts several couples coming from abroad and is a consolidated and strategic segment in Colombia that can have a remarkable economic spillover, ranging from $20.000 to $50.000 per event.
More than 60% of destination weddings held in Colombia take place in hotel spaces or outdoor venues, haciendas and in country estates.
About 80% of couples who perform in Colombia are made up of a national who decides to get married in the country.
The United States of America and Spain are the main countries of residences of couples who choose Colombia as a favourite destination venue.
The list of the main destinations with the highest demand for the organization of weddings is led by Cartagena de Indias with a participation of 44% followed by Medellin with 20%, Bogotá, 12%, Santa Marta, 6%, Cali, 4%, and San Andrés, 3%.
However there are other destinations that with less participation are also requested such as Armenia, Barranquilla, Cajicá, Dibulla, Fusangasugá, Pereira and Villa de Leyva.
The Executive President of ANATO, the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism, Paula Cortés Calle said that the beauty and characteristics of the tourist attractions of the different regions of the country is undoubtedly one of the main engines for romance tourism, which include actions such as marriage proposals, weddings, vow renewals, honeymoons anniversaries, romantic getaways among others, aligned with market trends.
However, in addition to the attractiveness of the destination, there are other aspects for which international visitors choose to carry out these activities in the national territory, such as their taste for gastronomy, beaches, religious aspects and geographical location.
The Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism head added that this segment is not only a trend today, but an evolution of experiential tourism that is expanding.
The quality of service, air connectivity, and Colombia's privileged location are determining aspects and opportunities to continue strengthening romance tourism and make the country more competitive.
