The Região de Aveiro, also known as Comunidade de Região de Aveiro located in the centre - west of Portugal, created in October 2008 replacing the previously existing Greater Metropolitan Area of Aveiro, launched a new development strategy for tourism to enhance the brand based on seven products.
The region offers several cultural and nature tourism with highlights centres of notable relevance for their cultural and historical relevance like Aveiro, famous for its canals and Art Nouveau architecture, the beaches of Costa Nova, Barra with their colourful haystacks and the Barra Lighthouse, and the São Jacinto Nature Reserve for birdwatching and lagoon lovers.
In addition the “Ria de Aveiro”, a lagoon located on the Atlantic coast south of Espinho and north of Mira will be repositioned as a product brand according to the Intermunicipal Community of the Region website.
The Intermunicipal Communitiy of the the Region of Aveiro (CIRA) released the new tourism development strategy that aims to promote the area as the reference tourist destination in the Central Region by 2035.
The plan, approved by the Intermunicipal Council and the Intermunicipal Assembly, is based on an updated diagnosis of the tourism activity municipalities that make up CIRA and on trends in the sector.
The strategy elects seven tourism products considered strategic :
• Nature tourism
• Cultural tourism
• Sun and sea tourism
• Gastronomy and wines tourism
• Nautical tourism
• Industrial tourism
• Art and architecture tourism
The strategy point to the Aveiro region as the new brand of tourism destination, through which the Intermunicipal Community intends to strengthen tourism as a strategic sector of in action and an instrument of territorial cohesion.
The document also segments tourist – issuing markets into three typologies :
• Growth markets
• Diversification markets
In this segmentation, France and Spain are pointed out as mature markets, Brazil and the United States as growth markets, and Canada is exemplified as a diversification market.
