Silves – Portugal | Medieval Fair – 09th - 17th August

 

Silves, beautiful city located in the district of Faro in Portugal, a relevant center that historically was the capital of the Algarve,  known for its remarkable historical and artistic heritage dating back to the Middle Age, where its magnificent castle and a charming core.

 

This center belonging to the cittaslow cities network will be the protagonist of the Medieval Fair that will be held from 09th  to 17th  August.

This event during its nine days of celebrations represents the recreation of the experiences lived by Silves in its years of splendor as relevant westernmost city of Gharb al-Andalus which was an important region of the Moorish – Iberian Empire.

A Highlight will be the introduction of  the theme "Xilb" the city of lovers and broken hearts in a Portuguese enclave famous for the beauty of its palaces, the resilience of its walls and the sweetness of its figs and apples that are exported all over the world.

Silves was historically famous for its literature, with very talented poets who had the meter of their verses as a highlight, odes with love stories that narrated passions, betrayals and disaffection experienced by illustrious local inhabitants.

The sounds of that era will echo again in the streets of this city in the Algarve, reproducing in a contemporary way the sermon of the Iman, welcoming the Visir, the ritual call to prayer of the Al-Muezzin, resounding from the top of the minaret and the local environment will be highlighted by celebrations, music and dances, vibrant and engaging, with the preaching and advice of the sellers, returning to the splendor of the Silves of the Middle Ages.

The medieval parade will take place every day from 18.00 and marks the beginning of the mystical atmosphere of the event with participants wearing clothes of that era parading through the old Medina and the outskirts of the city.

The war games will take place in Al-Mut'amid Square from 20.00 to 22.00 where the protagonists will be Yahyâ Ibn Bakr Ibn Zadalf who opposes the Umayyad army of the Umayyad Arab dynasty which was the ruling family of the Caliphate of al-Andalus between 756 and 1031.

The medieval fair of Silves is also characterized by the "Nights of the East Lights" with the castle illuminated and the protagonist of a magnificent show of music, dance and fire at 22.30.

The Fair is also considered a celebration where protagonists are also gastronomy, historical entertainment with the presence of more than a hundred exhibitors with pastry chefs, merchants, artisans and mystics among others.

The mayor of Silves Rosa Palma commented that at the epicenter of the Fair the primary focus is the culture and rich history of Silves, this historical recreation animates the event and above all reflects the unique character of the city and its people in a place that is a historical treasure trove of cultures, religions, knowledge that all shape the local cultural identity of which one is deeply proud.
