Funchal, the largest city, capital and the municipal seat of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira, attractive archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, a locality well known for its harbour, splendid beaches, attractive gardens, suggestive landscapes highlighted by picturesque hills and Prestigious Wine Cellars, from 1st January 2025 will apply a new tourist tax intended to for cruising travellers.
The Municipal Chamber of Funchal is going to charge this new tourist tax of € 2.0 for each cruise passenger who leaves, information confirmed by Mayor Cristina Cristina Pedra.
This tourist tax application will have a value similar to the one that on 1st October began to be charged for overnight stays in hotels and local accommodation in Funchal.
The Mayor commented that for now, starting from on 1st October 2024 the toursit tax of € 2.0 per night per guest to local hotels and accommodations.
There was a commitment with CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association,that Funchal honours in full compliance and to apply the same value of the tourist tax as of 1st January 2025.
The application of this new tax is intended to address the increase in the cost of tourism and the high presence of tourism in Funchal, which despite having 115.000 inhabitants receives 100.000 tourists a day, causing enormous pressure for the city.
