Play Airlines | Reduction on North American Routes and Focus on Southern Europe

Play Airlines, Icelandic low-cost airline founded in 2019 that started its operations in the second quarter of 2021, headquartered in the country's capital of Reykjavik with its main hub at Keflavik International Airport has announced plans to reduce its capacity to North America as part of a strategic change in its business model and will focus on routes to Southern Europe with an adjustment already underway.

The Icelandic airline currently serves five destinations such as Boston, Baltimore, Washington, New York and Hamilton and intends to reduce its flight schedule to focus on another geographical area, a move away from Play Airlines' initial strategy of providing convenient stopovers in Iceland for passengers travelling between Europe and North America.

In the future, Play Airlines' core business will be focused more on connecting Southern European markets, basically taking advantage of the growing demand for these routes which have also proved to be more profitable.

These restructuring operations come as Play Airlines is looking to hone its strategic position in an increasingly competitive transatlantic market where it had previously sought to attract budget-conscious travellers by connecting via Iceland's capital Reykjavik.

The Icelandic low-cost airline will continue this process in 2025 and the number of destinations it will serve in North America and Northern Europe will decrease by mid-2025.

Details on which specific North American routes will be reduced or cut have yet to be confirmed.
