Parques de Sintra, the parks of Sintra located in the town of the same name on the slopes of the Serra de Sintra, a narrow green chain with granite peaks that stretches between Lisbon and the Atlantic Ocean in the province of Extremadura was named for the second year the winner of the coveted award " "World's Best Cultural Destination" at the World Luxury Travel Awards 2024.
The Parques de Sintra consist in an extraordinary and unique complex of parks, gardens, country houses, palaces, castles and monasteries which create an architecture that fully harmonizes with the exotic, and overgrown vegetation creating a stunning micro landscapes of idyllic and luxuriant beauty.
The eleven parks that make up this sort of paradise include the National Park and Palace of Pena, the National Palaces of Sintra and Queluz, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, the Castle of the Moors, the Park and Palace of Montserrate, the Castle of the Moors, the Capuchin Convent and the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art.
This monumental complex is famous for its 19th century Romanticist architecture, it was once a summer retreat for Portuguese royalty, nobility, national nomenclature and due to its beauty and austerity it was also much loved by European artists and writers such as Hans Christian Andersen who defines it as “the most beautiful place in Portugal” or the famed English tragic poet Lord Byron who in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage defines Sintra as the “Garden of Eden”.
This reaffirmation consolidates Sintra's positioning as an international cultural reference destination with a high-level award that recognizes the decisive role that the Parques de Sintra have played in the conservation, enhancement and dissemination of the most important heritage values that make up the Sintra Cultural Landscape, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
The World Luxury Travel Awards were created in 2019 to reward companies that stand out for their excellence in the luxury travel segment and tourism industry, giving them the international recognition they deserve.
The nominees for the 146 categories of the World Luxury Travel Awards are divided into the themes "Air", "Water", "Land", "Destination" and "Lifestyle" were selected by an independent jury, whose choices are based on the evaluation made of visits to the places taking into account criteria such as excellence in service, attention to detail and efficiency among others.
The Parques de Sintra Organization has stated that since the feedback of visitors is the basis of the World Travel Awards, winning this award attests to the quality of the experience of visiting the 11 parks and monuments that the company takes care of.
