Venice, the "Queen of the Adriatic" universally considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, declared together with its lagoon, a world heritage site by UNESCO, a magnificent, romantic and more than captivanting coastal city in northeastern Italy in the Veneto region extending on the Venetian terraferma as well as a group of 121 small islands separated by a network of canals and connected by 435 bridges will host the second edition of " Murano Illumina il Mondo", Murano Light up the World, a project promoted by The Venice Glass Week and the Municipality of Venice which will be held throughout the winter period from late November 2024 to late February 2025.
The iconic Murano glass also known as Venetian glass, hand - made blown glassware crafted using special methods and technique with the earliest documented mention dating back the year 982 boasting an absolute international prestige returns again this year to illuminate St. Mark's Square, the stupendous city's main public square containing the most shining buildings of Venice such as St.Marks's Basilica and the Doge's Palace renowned throughout the world for its unique beauty and architectural integrity and also known as "the Drawing Room of Europe".
This event represents a successful partnership between glass and contemporary art and for the winter period from November to February eleven splendid chandeliers resulting from the collaboration between internationally renowned artists and some of the most prestigious furnaces in Murano will light up every evening in the marvelous Venetian living room between the arches of the historic "Procuratie Vecchie" those imposing buildings in the Sestiere of San Marco surrounding the iconic square on three sides taking their name from the fact the procurators of the Venetian Republic were lodged there.
The selected artists were asked to reinterpret an object of daily use, the chandelier, using ancient and modern glass techniques made available to them by the most famous and prestigious Murano furnaces and their sublime Masters.
The creation of "Murano Illuminates the World" is possible thanks to the generosity of artists and furnaces who have believed in the project of this second edition and to the collaboration established between The Venice Glass Week, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Le Stanze del Vetro, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Pentagram Stiftung. Veneto Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts, Consorzio Promovetro Murano and the Municipality of Venice.
