Canada | Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Greece to Strengthen a Solid Cooperation in the Tourism Sector

Canada, through its Embassy in Greece after a meeting which took place in Athens with the Greek authorities signed a MOU, a memorandum of understanding with Greece with the aim to strengthen a solid cooperation in the tourism sector to promote tourism between the two countries.

At the meeting, Greece's Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni, and Karine Asselin, Canada's Ambassador to Greece signed this partnerhip that paves the way for further collaborations on tourism, digitalisation, travel data sharing, tourism investments, education, training and the development of new products and services.

Both nations have committed to intensifying a solid collaboration and sharing knowledge on travel and tourism to improve strategies, create opportunities to boost tourism between the two countries, promotion of good practices for climate action in tourism, knowledge sharing on the global tourism market and highlighting the importance of research.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada Department said that this agreement will boost institutional co - operation, recreational travel between the two nations, the exchange of information and data to related to travel and tourism, and the sharing of best climate action in tourism.

Canada and Greece maintain a growing trade and investment relationship, supported by the CETA, the Global Economic and Trade Strategy between Canada and the European Union.

Directly linked to that the Canadian institutions said that the trade relationship between the countries has grown in recent years because of the Canada - European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and in 2024, bilateral merchandise trade with Greece was $645.8 million.

The Government of Canada hopes to deepen its bilateral ties with Greece and expand its tourism sector, inviting more international visitors to benefit communities throughout the country.

The Canadian Minister of export promotion, international trade and economic development, Mary Ng said that the agreement will make it easier for Canadians and Greeks to explore and enjoy each other's countries while supporting economic prosperity for both.

From her part Canada's Tourism Minister Pascale St- Onge said that the agreement will bolster cultural ties between the countries.

This type of agreement one tourism expert says will become more common as Canada strengthens its bonds with European Union nations and looks for tourism markets beyond the United States, when travel and tourism play a key role in driving economic growth, developing destinations and fostering intercultural understanding.

Both countries share a rich history based on mutual values such as democracy, human rights and the state of the world. The strong cultural links between Canada and Greece are being strengthened by the 300.000 Canadians of Greek ancestry and the numerous Canadians who live, work and study in Greece increasing even more the relationship between both countries.

The Director at Toronto Metropolitan University's Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Research, Wayne Smith said that he expects Canada to sign more memorandum with other EU countries going forward as Canada and Europe grow closer.

After signing the Greece's Minister Olga Kefalogianni stressed that the agreement underscores the commitment of both nations to promote a sustainable and innovative tourism model and is expected to strengthen institutional cooperation and open new opportunities for tourism development.
