This change reshapes the Brazilian city’s internal divisions with a reorganisation that divides the existing West Zone into two distinct areas, with the aim to better address the specific needs and interests of the newly designated region, according to Metropóles, a Brazilian online newspaper based in the capital of the country, Brasilia.
The new city’s zone spans approximately 200 square kilometres, encompasses 21 districts, and is home to an estimated 1.2 million residents.
The districts included in the West Zone are : Anil, Barra de Tijuca, Camorim, Cidade de Deus, Curicica, Freguesia, Gardenia Azul, Grumari, Jacarepaguá, Joá, Praça Seca, Pechincha, Rio das Pedras, Recreio dos Baindairantes, Tanque, Taquara, Vargem Grande, Vargem Pequena and Vila Valqueire.
According to the Councilman, the Southwest zone meets the long - standing demands of these neighbourhoods in search of their identity different from the roots West Zone which include neighbourhoods such as Campo Grande and Realengo among others
Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor indicated his support for the reorganisation, stating that it was appropriate to recognise the unique character of the districts that now make up the Southwest Zone.
The primary rationale behind the creation of the Southwest Zone is the recognition that the various districts within the former West Zone have different priorities and requirements. By separating these areas the authorities hope to streamline public services and allocate resources more effectively.
Local government officials empashises that the creation of the Southwest Zone will facilitate a more targeted approach to infrastructure development and resource allocation.
