Giza, Egypt | Grand Egyptian Museum to Open in November

Giza, a city in Egypt located on the west bank of the Nile near Cairo, most famous as the location of the emblematic Giza Plateau, the site of some of the most impressive Egyptian royal mortuary and sacred structures, among which are the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other large pyramids and temples will see the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum on 1st November 2025,  with the main inauguration followed by invited events on 2 and 3 November before public access from 4 November.

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is located at Alexandria Desert Road, Kafr Nassar, Al Haram, about 2 kilometres from the Giza Pyramid Complex. It is described as the world’s largest archaeological museum in the world for a single civilization as the the Egyptian housing over 100.000 artifacts spanning prehistoric to Roman times, with a focus on modern amenities, sustainable design, and displaying many items for the first time.

This $1 billion complex with an area of 5.2 million square feet is designed to evoke an emotional response similar to standing before the pyramids, and where visitors are greeted by a monumental entrance and a soaring atrium. 

The museum boasts a collection of the most valuable Egyptian artifacts ever from various periods of the Egyptian civilization, from the Predynastic Period to Coptic Egypt and housing the complete Tutankhamun collection that refers to the over 5.000 artifacts discovered in the pharaoh’s intact tomb by Howard Carter in 1922. These objects, from the 18th Dynasty offer a unique look into ancient Egyptian life, death, and craftmanship.

Other Museum highlights are a six - story staircase which is lined with ancient statues, including those of kings and queens, which tell the story of Egyptian history and a 36 - foot - tall, 3200 - year old statue of Pharaoh Rameses II stands at the heart of the museum.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said that the opening would be “a night to remember” after earlier delays linked to regional events.

The Minister added that the museum’s security systems are robust, distancing them front theft incidents elsewhere, while new galleries and features, including Ramesses II displays and a restoration centre, aim to strengthen Egypt’s cultural appeal.

With this opening authorities expect daily visitors to rise from 5.000 - 6.000 to as much a triple post - opening, supporting the tourism sector that contributes 8.5% of GDP and 2.7 million jobs with Egypt that is targeting 18 million visitors in 2025, up from 15.7 million in 2024.
