Kashan, Iran | Named as a Creative City for Architecture by UNESCO

Kashan, a city in the Central District of Kashan County, in the northern part of  Isfahan province in Iran, one of the oldest Iranian cities and one of the oldest continuously inhabited centres in the world was named by UNESCO as a creative city for architecture.

UNESCO has designed Kashan as a City of Architecture within its Creative Cities Network, the announcement was made on World Cities Day 2025 during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. 

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network brings together over 300 cities worldwide that have recognized creativity as a driver for sustainable urban development. The network promotes cooperation across seven creative fields : Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music. Key features include sharing best practices, developing partnerships, and integrating creativity into local development strategies and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Home to more 1.700 historic sites, including 330 national monuments and one UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kashan showcases the elegance and traditional Iranian architecture, according to IRNA, the official news agency of the country.

Kashan joins global network recognising innovation and heritage in sustainable urban design, a centre which features a rich history spanning 7.000 years, prominent architectural sites like the UNESCO - listed Fin Garden, and historic Qajar - era houses renowned for their elaborate plasterwork, stained glass and mirror work. The city is also known for the Agha Bozorg Mosque, its traditional bazaar, Persian garden design, featuring fountains, waterways, and pavilions and being a major producer of rosewater and handmade carpets.

The media outlet highlighted that joining the global network opens new opportunities for international cooperation, cultural investment and the revival of authentic Iranian architecture within a modern context.
