Garmsar, a city in the Central District of Garmsar County in the Seman province located on the edge of Dasht - e - Kavir, Iran’s largest desert about 95 kilometres southeast of the capital of the country Teheran, through its authorities is planning to create health tourism centres in its salt mines aimed to become tourist attractions as reported by the Teheran Times, the most important daily newspaper in the country founded in 1979.
The city is known for the largest salt tunnels in Central Asia, of which there are about forty in the region. These large spaces have been dug for salt extaction, they have smooth walls with large columns that protect the roof from collapsing and they are especially in depth brightly lit and decorated by stalactites making them a great attraction.
Each of the mines also has its own unique appearance features, in some of them there are pools, which has added to their attractiveness, and they are also used in medical in medical fields. It is believed that breathing in these salt - satured spaces is useful in curing and treating respiratory diseases.
According to Head of Garmsar Cultural Heritage Department Milad Rezaei, projects to attract visitors have already been launched. The government is actively supporting travel agencies, and documentary films about these attractions are being shot.
Garmsar Governor Ali Hemmati said that the project would create new jobs and diversify the local economy.
