Kenyan fintech firm Craft Silicon, based in Nairobi, a company that provides software solutions for Core Banking, Micro Finance, Switching and Electronic Payments, has launched TouristTap, a mobile app that transforms any NFC - enabled smartphone into a secure point of sale device, enabling international visitors to pay with Visa or Mastercard without the need for cash, card machines, or currency exchange.
This new contactless payment app for visitors to Kenya launched in September 2025 to allow tourists to use their own contactless credit or debit car to pay at markets and roadside vendors, streamlining transactions and reducing the need for cash or local SIM cards, a service that aims to simplify payments for tourists and provide access to Kenya’s mobile money economy without the usual hassle.
The app, certified by Visa and Mastercard and compliant with global payment standards aims to ease common payment barriers for visitors, from safaris to local markets, it uses Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, allowing tourists to tap their contactless card or device on the back of a merchant’s phone, transforming it into a payment terminal.
Travellers using TouristTap can make payments easily and quickly, eliminating the need for local currency or complex mobile money setup. TouristTap supports transactions across mobile wallets, till numbers, and bank accounts offering greater reach for small - scale vendors and informal tourism operators.
Backed by rising digital payments in Kenya, valued at $4.2 billion in 2024 according to the Central Bank, the app is positioned to boost visitor convenience and revenue across the tourism value chain.
Craft Silicon after this national launch plans to expand TouristTap to other African travel destinations to address payment challenges across the continent.
