Manama, the modern capital and largest city of of Bahrain, financial hub of the Persian Gulf Region and a center of Islamic banking at the center of major trade routes since antiquity well known for its large retail sector in the shopping malls around Seef and with its core dominted by traders and workshops will host the 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism from 18th to 19th November 2024.
Held for the first time in the Middle East, the event focuses on the theme "Gastronomic Tourism: A Driver for Economic Diversification and Inclusion" and will bring together world leaders, policymakers, industry experts and renowned chefs.
This event will undoubtedly be a showcase that will highlight and illustrate at 360 degrees the transformative potential of gastronomic tourism with the aim of promoting sustainability, inclusion, economic resilience and the creation of a strong image of the destinations.
The Forum, organized with the collaboration of the BCC, Basque Culinary Center, foundation created in 2009 by Mondragon University and a group of prominent Basque chefs headquartered in San Sebastián in the Basque region of Spain and hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain, will see the interventions of Ministers from all over the world and in particular from the Middle East.
There will also be the participation of award-winning chefs of international level such as Rudolf Štefan, well known for his passion for creative cuisine and listed in the exclusive list of the Jeunes Restaurateurs d' Europe and owner of Konoba Pelegrini, a renowned restaurant in Šibenik – Croatia and Alejandra Espinoza of the famous restaurant Somos based in Quito – Ecuador talented chef who combines influences from local gastronomy with her culinary studies in France to create globally inspired dishes.
Among the notable participants there will be the CEO of 50 Best Tim Brooke - Webb who gives visibility and power to chefs from all over the world by promoting a global dialogue that sublimates gastronomy to make it essentially a cultural, creative and economic force.
The World Forum of Gastronomy will highlight initiatives of excellence that emphasize the quality and origin of products such as the initiative from Jordan called "From Farm to Fork" headquartered in Jabal al -Weibdeh, neighbouhood in Downtown Amman promoting culinary tourism with a central role for sustainable gastronomy at the intersection of agriculture, culinary arts, heritage and responsible tourism.
A further presence of relevance will be Le Collège Culinaire de France based in Paris, founded by 15 renowned chefs in 2011, that embodies a new cculture of culinary craftmanship as an alternative to the industrialization and standardization of production,catering and food and recognized for the promotion of quality gastronomy and the support of artisans committed to the preservation of traditional know-how.
The event will also be attended by the Spanish Group Sagardi founded in Barcelona, one of the leading hospitality organizations. born in 1994 with the aim of seeking gastronomic roots, to offer high – quality, solid and authentic proposals.
In line with discussions on the exploitation of intangible cultural heritage, the Forum will examine crucial issues such as the conservation of culinary heritage and biodiversity, the use of intellectual property and brands to enhance the brand image of destinations and the notion of authentic and engaging cultural experiences along the value chain of gastronomic tourism.
To address these issues, experts from WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization of the global Slow Food movement, and the Creative Tourism Network will participate in the event.
The theme of sustainability will be a focal point of the event with discussions on the theme of reducing food waste, integrating the principles of the circular economy and encouraging local sourcing.
Directly linked to that there will be the master class of LightBlue Consulting, a UN - awarded Best Small Business Food Waste prevention tech and consultancy organization reconciling sustainability with business excellence based in Bangkok - Thailand which will explore circular solutions for reducing food waste.
Another presence of relevance will be the prominent chef of the United Arab Emirates Leyla Fathallah who taught classes at numerous restaurants and schools, been featured in publications and workshops, founder of L Cuisine Catering, the brand ambassador for some of the most renowned brands in the Arab region and coordinator of PNUMA.
At the Forum there will be the participation of the aforementioned PNUMA, One Planet Sustainable Tourism program and active in the campaign against food waste called "Recipe of Change" and Ehfaaz, circular economy startup, specialized in closed-loop recycling that uses waste to create new products and reduce environmental impact.
Innovation will be another fundamental pillar of the event and Meta will hold a masterclass on the influence of technology and social networks in the reconfiguration of gastronomic tourism.
A further highlight of the Forum will be a round table that will deal with the theme of how to build the image of a destination through gastronomy.
The event will also be the venue that will host the final of the fourth UN Tourism global competition for startups in the gastronomic tourism sector in which start-ups from all over the world will present innovative solutions focused on responding to the challenges faced by the gastronomic tourism sector.
Another attraction will be live cooking demonstrations with Bahraini chefs who will offer participants an immersive experience in the unique culinary traditions of the country while parallel activities will allow you to discover the profile of the destination while discovering the rich cultural and historical heritage of this Middle Eastern country.
