Panama | Recognised as a Leading Destination for Birdwatching

Panama, a central American country well known for its iconic canal connecting the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean, a vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, a relevant culinary offering is also recognised as a leading destination for birdwatching.

The unique geographical location of Panama at the crossroads of North and South America, combined with diverse habitats like rainforests, wetlands, and coastlines, results in a rich avian biodiversity supporting a wide array of birdlife and the country is home to almost 10% of the world’s bird species.

Panama boasts almost 1.000 bird species, including many endemic and near - endemic species, and unique ecosystems, making it a prime destination for birding enthusiasts.

For the first time, the Latin American country had an official presence at the Global Bird Fair, the most important international birdwatching event which took place from 11th to 13th July 2025 in Rutland, England, UK, a strategic presence that represented a milestone in the country’s positioning within the birdwatching segment at international level.

The presence at this relevant event is part of the tourism diversification strategy of the country which seeks to develop products based on the natural and cultural wealth of the nation.

The participation at the Global Bird Fair was supported by the Tourism Authorities of Panama, PROMTOUR Panama, the destination marketing organization that promote the country as an international tourist destination, focusing on innovative tourism strategies to attract visitors from around the world and Alada Foundation, organization that has been working for three years to educate, connect, and articulate knowledge about birds and conservation.

Panama introduced its specialized tourism offer under the identity of Panama’s Birds Team, a unified proposal that reflects the ornithological richness of the country and its commitment to sustainable, nature and conservation tourism.

With more than 1.000 species of birds registered, seven Ramsar sites and about 120 national parks and protected areas, Panama is consolidated as a green destination of high value for ornithological tourism and added to this is its strategic international air connectivity plays a crucial role, facilitating the arrivals of severla travellers from the Americas and Europe and also supports the growth for this type of tourist segment.

During the Global Bird Fair, the Panamanian delegation offered four thematic conferences focused on biodiversity and conservation, sustainable birds tourism experiences, ornithological routes in Panama, and positive impact of birdwatching on local communities, activities that seek to arouse the interest of operators, experts and media specialized in nature trips.

Participation in a relevant event as the Global Bird Fair opens the door to strategic alliances with tour operators, conservation organizations, and international media.

This event undoubtedly reinforced the image and reputation of Panama as an authentic and diverse destination, prepared to receive responsible travellers from Europe, the United States and Latin America.

The fair also represented for the Central American country a key opportunity to strengthen the country’s digital positioning in specialized tourism niches, where the search for unique experiences is on the rise. 

Panama thus advance in its consolidation as one of the most attractive and recognised destinations in the Neottropics for birdwatching, offering experiences that combine conservation, sustainability and direct contact with nature.
