San Pedro Sula, a city in the Sula Valley of northern Honduras, the capital of Cortés Department, and largest centre of the country after the capital Tegucigalpa, the largest city in Central America that is not a capital city, known as one of the nation's main transport hubs and Honduras' primary industrial centre consolidated itself as a leading MICE tourism destination in Central America.
Honduras managed a significant progress in promoting MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Congresses and Events) in major development hubs and emerging city but the city of San Pedro Sula is undoubtedly the best positioned for meetings tourism thanks to its installed capacity, which includes air connectivity, a notable hotel network, high - end restaurants, proximity to other flagship destinations and the city is firmly advanced as one of the main centres for this tourism segment in the region.
With two large convention centers, a solid air connectivity, and a growing hotel infrastructure, San Pedro Sula recently stood out as the venue for COCAL 2025, one of the main tourism meetings in Latin America.
The edition of COCAL brought together representatives of 19 nationalities, and had an investment between $800. 000 and $900.000, reaffirming the city and the country's commitment to the development of event tourism in the MICE tourism segment.
During the event the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Honduras, Reizel Vitorio, highlighted the key role of public - private investment in positioning the country as a competitive destination.
Local gastronomy was also protagonist in the program of activities within COCAL, considered by the Minister as a cultural engine and a strategic tool to retain visitors. Typical dishes, regional flavours and local products were integrated both in the panels and in the experiences offered to the attendees, strengthening the identity of the destination.
San Pedro Sula in terms of connectivity is nowadays an important hub in the Central American country maintaining regular flights to Madrid operated by Air Europa and Barcelona managed by Iberojet with high occupancy, which reinforces the arrival of several European travellers.
Regarding the hospitality sector, the Honduran city offers more than 2.800 rooms, with an outstanding range of boutique hotels and very suitable accommodations for business travellers.
San Pedro Sula also offers various attractions such as the San Pedro Sula Anthropology Museum that has exhibits on the region’s past from pre - Columbian times to the present, the Daisy Fasquelle Bonilla Museum, a placewhere tribute is paid to Honduran painters, and the Museum of Nature, featuring exhibits on the environment, Honduran biology and a large collection of stuffed specimen of birds, mammals, and reptiles that have been found in Honduran territory.
To the west of the city, in the Merendón mountains, Cususco National Park has trails through cloud forest rich in wildlife including many species of birds, among them the rare quetzal bird and is an ideal destination for hiking and other outdoor activities.
With a growing proposal that combines meetings, nature, gastronomy and culture, San Pedro Sula seeks to position itself not only as a MICE city, but also as a comprehensive tourist destination that opens new doors for the economic development in Honduras.
