Seychelles | Advancing to Develop its National Cruise Tourism Strategy

The development of Seychelles’ first dedicated Cruise Tourism Stategy has officially begun, following a cost - benefit analysis for 2026 - 2033 presented earlier this year.

At a briefing at Botanical house on 14th October 2025 the Seychelles Tourism Department and the UN Economic Commission for Africa’s Sub - Regional Office for Eastern Africa (UNECA) outlined the stakeholder consultation process to shape the plan.

The UNECA team conducted a series of stakeholder consultations as part of a scoping mission to advance and guide the formulation of the cruise national strategy with sessions which took place across Mahé (14th, 15th , and 20th October) , LA Digue (16th October) and Praslin (17th October).

The project is a joint effort between the Tourism Department and UNECA, with technical and financial support from the latter establishing a strategy that aims to support sustainable growth and stronger sector management in line with international best practice, ensuring cruise tourism, one of Seychelles’ three tourism pillars alongside land - based and yachting, continues to diversify the country’s offer while delivering balanced economic and environmental benefits.

Cruise tourism in Seychelles is recovering well, the sector has shown remarkable resilience through past disruption with a projected 47 cruise ships for the 2025 - 2026 season, a 25% increase from the previous year. This growth aligns with the broader recovery of the tourism sector, which saw a significant surge in visitor numbers in the last three years.

With recent award recognitions for the country and its main ports, cruise tourism continues to play a key role in diversifying the country’s tourism offerings. The industry is supported by the Seychelles Port Authority (SPA) and the Ministry of Tourism which are working together to manage and grow the sector, actions that will be enhanced by this new strategy.
