Tokyo, Japan | The Metropolitan Government Launched “ Go Tokyo Gourmet”, a Website to Showcase the City's Rich Culinary Culture

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched the “Go Tokyo Gourmet”, a website to showcase the city's rich culinary culture, with the aim to highligh and promote various gastronomic attractions in Japan and abroad.

Tokyo’s culinary culture is a vibrant fusion of deep rooted tradition like Edomae, sushi and soba, combined with an innovative international cuisine, highlighted by a strong emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients, meticulous presentation, and sustainability, with a large offer ranging from Michelin stars to affordable izakayas, ramen shops, themed eateries, and humble street food, reflecting its status as a gourmet capital with unique local specialties like monjayaki and chanko - nab among others.

In Tokyo tradition meets innovation with a balance between Edo - period dishes and modern culinary experimentation with a deep respect for seasonality and freshness, sourcing seafood from markets like Toyosu and produce from nearby farms and visual appeal is paramount, with careful arrangement and selection of tableware.

Tokyo’s culinary appeal lies in its diversity which ranges from traditional dishes passed down from the Edo Period (in Edo the former name of Tokyo), also known as the Tokugawa period, the era between 1601 or 1603 and 1868 in the history of Japan, when the country was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate using a feudal system supported by 300 lords named daimyo and when started the preparation of the emblematic sushi (vinegared rice with sliced raw fish on top) and the famous tempura (fried seafood) asmong others.

These dishes with their more contemporary evolution kept the tradition to use locally ingredients rooted in Tokyo’s natural environment, and today they are served in high - quality restaurants where renowned Japanese and international chefs showcase their skills.

The website features articles and videos about Tokyo’s diverse food offerings and the richness of its culinary culture. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government hopes that the site will encourage visitor’s interest in Tokyo’s cuisine and encourage them to visit the city and experience its varied gastronomy firsthand.

“ Go Tokyo Gourmet” not only provides gourmet information, but also highlights the depth of Tokyo food culture, including its history and traditions dating back to the Edo period, its evolution and development to the present day, the thoughts and philosophy of the city’ s food professionals, the everyday meals of Tokyo residents, and the future of the Japanese capital’ s food, including sustainability and diversity.

In addition the website publishes information on how to eat Japanese food, unique services and manners from Japan, food – related events in Tokyo, and restaurant reservation sites in Japanese capital including  sites that support vegan and halal options.
