Scanzorosciate - Bergamo | Picturesque Landscapes & Unique Moscato Rosso D.O.C.G Wine

Scanzorosciate, is an attractive town in the province of Bergamo located in a hilly area on the slopes of the fascinating Orobic Alps, historically known since the time of  the Emperor Augustus in Roman times when an important, strategic Castrum erected by Tribune Scanzius arose in its territorial terms from which derives the current name of this municipality that lies near the picturesque Monte Bastia and the suggestive Serradesca Valley.

With a rich historical and monumental heritage, Scanzorosciate is also famous for the production of the only red Moscato in the world, the famous Moscato D.O.C.G., created in ancient times from vines originally grafted by a colony of expert Greek winemakers sent by the Roman Empire to populate this geographical area and develop this activity also thanks to the benevolent climatic conditions that allowed since then the cultivation of grapes and a consequent profitable harvest.

Once you reach your destination, in a pleasant walk you can enjoy magnificent views of the picturesque hills surrounding Scanzorosciate, on whose municipal surface there are several stately villas , some of them built in the seventeenth century.

It is worth a short but obligatory visit to the beautiful Church of Rosciate erected in the nineteenth century and dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta , appreciating in its interior beautiful frescoes made by a talented artist from Clusone called Antonio Gifrondi.

Afterwards you can move to the hamlet of Negrone you can admire the historic Parish Church of San Pantaleone of medieval origin, built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries which boasts an imposing façade with large arches, a splendid dome and a high bell tower of typical Romanesque architectural matrix.

The greatest highlight is undoubtedly inside, corresponding to the wonderful apse frescoed by Francesco Zucco and you will also appreciate some paintings by Talpino, an eclectic painter who was very active in the Bergamo area.

Thanks to the fame of its wine, its attractive territory and the commitment of local institutions to encourage tourism, Scanzorosciate has created a nature trail called "Strada del Moscato di Scanzo" which winds through the vineyards of the place.

This initiative offers the opportunity to admire the beautiful landscapes of this corner of Lombardy, unquestionably giving an accent of resonance in inviting the tourist to discover the local beauties by walking along a very suggestive itinerary without necessarily being a wine lover.

On the subject of wine, on this "path", you will be able to discover the composition of the soil, the type of native grapes, the maximum altitudes of grafting that give Moscato D.O.C.G.,

Quality, taste and flavor of the finished product are the main features of a wine that in many years of activity started in historical cycles with various grafting experiments has reached various markets both nationally and internationally.

The origins of the spaces selected since time by the ancient Hellenic colonists who studied the conditions of the local climate and the subsoil that is very suitable for this crop, not being humid or arid, therefore suitable for obtaining very satisfactory results, have undoubtedly marked a viable path over the centuries in terms of production.

The fundamental processes to produce this wine are maceration that lasts five days, racking, fermentation and racking in special

Moscato di Scanzo D.O.C.G, with this brand and controlled designation, is only allowed in the province of Bergamo, it is characterized by its intense ruby red color,  sometimes with garnet reflections.

This wine gives off a delicate aroma but with time it becomes more intense, with a very pleasant flavor, very sweet, harmonious and with a tendency to almonds.

In the ideal combinations, this kind of Moscato is fantastic with dark chocolate, served with various cheeses such as fresh Formaggelle, Taleggio, Strachinunt, Formai de Mut from Val Brembana and goat cheese from the Bergamo Valleys.

Time for your lunch staying in the traditional restaurant I recommend Cansonsei with Butter and Sage or Risotto with Local Sausages, among the second courses Chicken with Onions or Stewed Pork Ribs with slice of Polenta Taragna.

A visit to Scanzorosciate is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the beauty of these lands near Bergamo and discover a wine such as Moscato di Scanzo D.O.C.G. one of a kind.
