Cambodia | Relaunch as Tourist Destination with a New Tourism Board

Cambodia, southeast Asian country highlighted by a suggestive landscape spans low - lying plains, scenic mountains and the Gulf of Thailand with its ravishing coastline has a new Tourism Board that wishes to place the country in the orbit of international tourism of relevant level.

The new CTB, Cambotian Tourism Board with a board set up as a public-private partnership platform was formed to actively promote various aspects of the kingdom's diverse offerings and inbound tourism with the support of the private sector and the government.

The country that boasts great attractions such as the iconic ruins of Angkor Wat, a massive stone remple complex built during the Khmer Empire, the capital Phnom Penh home of the art deco central market, the glittering Royal Palace, the National Museum' historical and archeological exhibits, several kilometres of virgin coastline, wonderful mountain ranges is a country that boasts a very diverse and rich culture and for all these reasons the new CTB wants to take advantage of these excellent resources for tourists.

CTB President Ith Vichit announced that the council will focus on the lesser-known west coast of the country from Koh Kong, an attractive island in the Gulf of Thailand, highlighted by its pristine beaches and the attractive fishing villages of Alatang, Phumi and Phumi Thmei and Kep close to the beautiful National Park of the same name, a place to relax exploring the nearby rural countryside and many villas left from by the French colonial authorities.

Other localities that will be included in this tourist revival will be the localities of Kampot, suggestive city on the Preaek Tuek Chhu river, known for its many buildings date from the colonial period and its salt fieds and pepper plantations and Sihanoukville, an attractive seaside resort, on a tip of an elevated peninsula in the country's south - west of the Gulf of Thailand bordering Ream National Park in the east.

The President of the new CBT pointed out that the beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear sea of Koh Rong close by Sihanoukville are among the best in Asia, Angkor Wat and Siem Reap will continue to improve their product and service offerings in the near future to create unforgettable and memorable experiences for visitors.

This tourist revival copes with a relatively lackluster post-pandemic with fewer arrivals of international tourists than neighboring countries which have had much better performances in terms of incoming tourism.

Cambodia reached its peak in 2019 with 6.6 million international arrivals, but in the following years projections remained stagnant or even declining after the Covid-19 pandemic.

A further significant figure is that between January and July 2024 the country recorded a decrease of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2019.

According to the CBT President, the Indo-Pacific region accounts for two-thirds of Cambodia's priority market while the remainder includes Western European countries such as France, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand.

The reasons why Cambodia's tourism sector has not been performing well are due to the lack of effective marketing, accessibility through opaque direct flights or combined flights with countries in the region as well as fears of kidnapping and other crimes related to online scams, all of which have affected the reputation of the Cambodian Kingdom.
