Kolwezi, The Democratic Republic of Congo | Plans to Transform its Airport in the Country’s Fourth Recognized International Gateway

The Democratic Republic of Congo is moving to upgrade Kolwezi Airport, located 6 km south of  Kolwezi, a major city in the southeastern part of the country and the capital of Lualaba District, known as a global hub for copper and cobalt, holding 100% of the world’s copper reserves and over a third of its cobalt stocks, planning to transform it in the country’s fourth recognized international gateway.

The airport mainly supports the local copper mining industry but the DRC Government plans to full its international status. If completed, Kolwezi Airport will become the country’ s fourth official entry point for overseas arrivals, opening the door to new travel routes and easier access to one of Central Africa’s most economically important regions.

Senior officials meeting in the capital of the country Kinshasa recently reviewed pre - financing proposals for essential air navigation equipment, marking progress in the certification process.

The upgrade targets compliance with ICAO standards and will require investment in navigation systems, safety infrastructure and operational procedures.

Key infrastructure improvements include the construction of a road interchange, a 2.5 km asphalt road to improve access, a 57 - metre bridge over the RN39, a 21 - metre bridge over the railway, alongside implementation of the ATALUS slope stabilization method to optimize construction.

Improved connectivity would enhance access to Lualaba Province and the Copperbelt business hub, reduce reliance on existing gateways and create new routing options, supporting business travel and unlocking tourism potential in southern DRC.
