Medellín, Colombia | Strategy to Consolidate the City as a Global Benchmark in the Entertainment Industry

Medellín, vibrant city and capital of Colombia’s mountainous Antioquia province, situated in the scenic Aburrá Valley, a central region of the Andes in northwestern South America, nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” for its temperate weather, recognized for its rich cultural heritage, innovation, urban development, new infrastructures, efforts to improve quality of its residents, highlighted by a unique “joie de vivre” and always ready to reinvent itself with something of new through its Tourism and Entertainment Secretariat is adopting a strategy to consolidate itself furthermore as a global benchmark in the entertainment industry.

The Latin American city aims to solidify its reputation as a vibrant entertainment hub in the region, driven by a growing cultural scene, major events, and a thriving local talent pool. 

The city is recognized as a birthplace of globally influential artists, further enhancing its appeal as a destination for major events and productions, it boasts a diverse entertainment scene encompassing live music, performing arts, gastronomy, nightlife, sports, and more.

With its unique energy Medellín was recognized as a UNESCO Creative City for music in 2015, highlighting the city’s commitment to use music as a driver for social revitalization and entertainment, and its success is evident with rise of acclaimed artists like J. Balvin, Karol G, and Maluma, becoming a very popular destination for major concerts and events,  attracting both local and international artists.

Medellín’s Tourism and Entertainment Secretariat is actively working and is making steady progress in its quest to consolidate furthermore the city as a competitive destination and a global benchmark in the entertainment industry.

A recent study conducted in partnership with EAFIT University, a top private university located in the city offering degrees in  various disciplines through its schools of Management, Engineering, Law, Finance and Economics, Science and Humanity, identified the challenges, opportunities, and strategic needed to strengthen this sector as a driver of economic,  cultural, and tourism development.

The report highlights that the Colombian city has an enormous potential to strengthen more and more its entertainment ecosystem through an innovative, inclusive, and sustainable approach, leveraging the creativity of its people, its emerging talents, and its cultural infrastructure.

The city with a strategic vision for a growing sector is committed to a dual development model, known as 2MDE, which integrates in its framework two types of offerings :

 MDE Production - Focused on niche creative content that promotes diversity and innovation.

•  MDE Show - Geared towards large, high - impact events that position Medellín internationally as a venue for cultural and entertainment experiences.

This Strategy aims to attract both new local audiences and international visitors, combining the authencity of artistic expression with the reach of large - scale events.

The study reveals that the entertainment ecosystem in the Latin American city is in its emerging stage with an expanding creative ecosystem boasting an enormous growth potential.

Of the more than 200 companies identified in different subsectors, such as live music, performing arts, gastronomy, nightlife, sports, audiovisual, video games, and cyberentertainment, 98% are small and medium - sized, and more than 60% have been created in the last five years. 

This dynamic represents a great opportunity to strengthen the formalization, sustainability, and professionalization of the sector, as well as to foster "coopetition", a strategic collaboration between actors who, while competing, join forces to grow collectively. This involves collaborating on certain aspects while maintaining rivalry in others, often leading to innovative solutions and shared benefits. 

While the city has the potential to become a benchmark for entertainment in Latin America, the study also identified structural challenges that require attention summarized in the following points

•    Lack of coordination between public and private actors. 
•    Need for a more consistent and diverse cultural offering. 
•    Limited strategic collaboration between companies.
•    Challenges in infrastructure, sustainability, and security.

In response, the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment proposes a set of strategic actions to foster the sector’s growth including : 

•    Strengthening artistic collaboration networks. 
•    Promoting alliances with hotels, restaurants, and event organizers. 
•    Promoting training and support programs for local talent.
•    Implementing trend analysis systems for decision – making. 
•    Consolidating creative clusters as a basis for the development of “entertainment cities.”

With this roadmap, Medellín reaffirms its commitment to developing an industry that not only generates employment and boosts the economy, but also transforms territories, connects communities, and projects the city’s identity to the world.

From festivals to digital experiences, from massive shows to independent artistic offerings, the South American city is gearing up to offer a diverse and distinctive agenda.

In this context, entertainment is not just a spectable : it is culture, it is opportunity, and it is the future. Medellín with its enormous potential and this innovative strategy is expected to continue to rise as a benchmark for entertainment in Latin America, and for sure ready to attract more major events and productions.
