Malaysia | Aiming for Record Tourism Numbers with Strategies Supported by VM2026 Campaign

Malaysia has set a target of attracting 43 million international visitors in 2025, with a goal of reaching 47 million in 2026, targets align with the aims of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

The objectives of the Southeast Asian country are supported by VM2026, the national tourism campaign for 2026, aiming to promote the country as a sustainable and world - class tourist destination, is an initiative that seeks to boost visitors numbers, create jobs, enhance the country’s global image, and foster prosperity by highlighting cultural heritage, modern attractions, and responsible travel experiences.

Key strategic partners like airline groups, hotel chains, and travel agencies are collaborating to improve connectivity, expand marketing, and deliver innovative visitor experiences and one of the main objective is to encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more, bolstering the nation’s economy.

As reported by Bernama, a Malaysian National News Agency linked to the Malaysian government, the Ministry of Tourism outlined three key strategies to ensure the success of VM2026, and these core strategies are : 

•    Demand Creation : Strengthening Malaysia’s brand and implementing marketing campaigns to attract a wider audience.
•    Traffic Enhancement : Tactical partnership with airlines, travel agencies, and regional entry points include land and sea to boost visitor numbers.
•    Targeted Marketing : Focus on specific markets and high – impact segments, including eco - tourism, shopping tourism, and niche attractions tailored to different traveller prefeences.

Malaysia’s outlook is positive, with expctations of a full recovery from the pandemic and growth beyond pre - pandemic levels by 2025, driven by strategic promotions and increasing arrivalsfrom Asia - Pacific, North America and Europe.

In 2024 the country welcomed 38 million international visitors, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year. Domestic tourism also saw robust growth, demonstrating the sector’s strong rebound.

Recognising the importance of attracting visitors year - round, the government is also focused on seasonal tourism promotion strategies, particularly aimed at attracting vistors from regions experiencing extreme weather. Plans are underway to intensify shopping tourism promotions with the aim to positioning Malaysia as a premier retail destinations.
