Granada was founded on 8th December 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, making it one of the oldest cities in the Americas and it was for a long time the principal city of the Province of Nicaragua in the Captaincy General of Guatemala, belonging to the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
The city arose adjacent the neigboring site of the
pre - Columbian ancestors town of Xalteva, an area containing in its urban
design a clear example of the traditional Spanish grid with a central square surrounded by
buildings which in the past hosted the headquarters of the civil, militar, religious commercial and economic powers..
