Singapore Airlines, the flag carrier of Singapore member of Star Alliance with its hub located at Changi Airport, has been granted permission to invest in Air India as part of the current renewal of the airline Indian flag carrier owned by Air India Limited founded in 1932 in Mumbai with its headquarter in New Dehli.
TTG Asia reported that the Government of India has approved plans for direct investment in Air India Group, which will allow Singapore Airlines to acquire a 25.1% stake in Air India Group, controlled by Tata Sons, parent company of the Tata Group, which in 2022 had acquired 100% of the shares by buying it for £1.7 million from the Indian Government after years of heavy losses.
TTGMedia reported that the group will include Vistara, an Indian full-service airline based in Gurgaon with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport, carrier that is joint venture between Tata Sons which holds a controlling stake of 51% and Singapore Airlines founded in 2013 a mainly domestic airline in the past rival of Air India.
The latest agreement between the two parties is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, allowing Singapore Airlines to have greater responsibility and action regarding the evolution of Air India, which after privatization has started a rebranding and has expanded frequencies on the main commercial routes to New Delhi and Mumbai.
