Solomon Islands | Best Incoming Tourism Numbers since 2019

Solomon Islands, state in the South Pacific Ocean, an archipelago consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Melanesia located east of Papua New Guinea is celebrating the best result of the second quarter in more than four years with regard to the number of visitors during the period between January and June 2024.

Data published by the National Bureau of Statistics of the Solomon Islands highlight an increase of 26.5% compared to the same period in 2023 showing that 11.333 international travellers visited the country during the six-month period, a figure that dwarfs the data of 8.957 recorded in the second quarter of 2023.

The 2024 data statistically are the best results since the second quarter of the record year 2019 when the Solomon Islands welcomed 12.742 international visitors.

Tourist arrivals from Australia continued to dominate the incoming ranking, with an increase of 7.2% moving from 3.490 to 3.743 visitors, an origin market that makes up 33% of the total number of international visitors.

The other key source markets of the destination such as the United States of America, Fiji and New Zealand recorded positive growth of 13.2%, 23.6% and 30% respectively, while by far the largest growth was achieved in the number of visitor arrivals coming from Papua New Guinea which increased from 572 to 1172 visitors with a remarkable increase of 106.7%.

Tourism Solomon Islands interim CEO Dagnal Dereveke commented that the brilliant result achieved in the second quarter of 2024 depends on the significant marketing efforts concerted by the National Tourism Board, with optimal operations and strategies that generated this excellent achievement.

Much of the international marketing activity has been concentrated in traditionally strong markets such as Australia and New Zealand, while the efforts made towards the Papua New Guinea market have generated highly positive results.

As with visitors from Fiji, most of the visits that the Solomon Islands receive are mainly of commercial nature.

These continued increases represent a great opportunity for Tourism Solomons to further expand its operations in the Fiji and Papua New Guinea markets and highlight the potential of domestic operators focused into these markets with the aim to attract more business travellers.
