San Juan, Argentina | Inaugurated the Country’s First Highway Fully Illuminated by Solar Energy

Argentina’s San Juan province, located in the west - central part of the country, known for its many lush vineyards, the towering peak of Cerro Mercedario which dominates the Andes near the Chilean border, the picturesque Tulúm Valley, its natural parks, and its lively capital San Juan boasting a relevant cultural heritage, a captivating destination that offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history and vibrant culture, has inaugurated the country’s first highway fully illuminated by solar energy, making it a landmark for sustainable engineering in the region.

The highway was developed along Circunvalación Avenue, using a smart, distributed system with solar panels, battery storage units and smart control equipments that stores energy during the day and ensures continuous illumination at night, even during adverse weather conditions.

According to Diario La R news Agency, the highway is equipped with a large - scale photovoltaic system that supplies all lighting along the corridor, making it the first highway in the South American country to operate entirely on renewable power for public lighting.

This transition has reduced energy consumption, lowered greenhouse gas emissions and cut operating costs associated with street lighting.

Key Details of the Project

•    Location: Circunvalación Avenue (National Route A014) in San Juan.
•    Technology: 36 individual solar panel arrays (5 kW each) on monopoles, paired with inverters, battery storage, and high efficiency LEDs, creating an autonomous system.
•    Functionality: Panels generate power during the day, feeding into the grid, and then draw from stored energy at night for lighting.
•    Benefits: Reduces energy consumption, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, cuts operating costs, and consolidate San Juan’s role in renewable energy.
•    Model: Follows a successful distributed generation model in places like the Netherlands, South Korea and California, U.S.

According to the source, the photovoltaic lighting system has enhanced night - time visibility and improved road safety along one of the province’s main transport corridors, supporting private drivers, cargo traffic and tourism activities.

San Juan province benefits from one of the highest levels of solar radiation in the Argentina, and the highway is part of a broader energy policy, that includes solar parks and public - private partnerships.

Provincial authorities stressed that the solar highway represents not only an environmental initiative but also a contribution to local economic development. The project has created jobs, supported the clean energy sector and strengthened San Juan’s position as a hub for energy innovation in Argentina.

This relevant project highlights Argentina’s broader commitment to renewable energy, supported by iniatives like the national RenovAr program, aiming to boost solar, wind, and hydro power nationwide.
