The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) led by the Ministry David Collado in collaboration with the Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster has launched a new edition of “Turizoneando”, a cultural initiative to enjoy the charm of the renovated “Ciudad Colonial”, the Colonial City, a World Heritage Site, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, known for its well - preserved architecture, historical sites, highlighted by a stunning grid - like of cobblestone streets and picturesque alleys, an urban area surrounded by a magic aura in Santo Domingo, the capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic.
Started in late December 2025 “Turizoneando” will turn the historic district’s main streets and plazas into vibrant cultural spaces until April 2026, with 18 consecutive weekends, offering cultural, artistic and recreational activities for residents and visitors.
Recent renovations in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City blend the preservation of its original 16th - century urban design and historic architecture with the integration of modern infrastructure and amenities.
Restoration efforts have focused on maintaining the original perimeter, street widths, and volumetric homogeneity of the area. This renovation also includes painting hundreds of homes and restoring numerous colonial - era facades using materials compatible with the original structures, preserving architectural details.
Projects also included burying electrical wires, improving strorm drains, and paving streets to modernize the urban environment.
Ministry of Tourism David Collado highlighted that the initiative comes at an ideal time to enjoy the renovated “Ciudad Colonial” the first City of America.
Turizoneando is a program transforming Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone into a cultural hub with free weekend activities like concerts, craft markets, free bike tours, extended museum hours, special access to historic churches, family - friendly events, theatre and children ‘s activities, exclusive promotions at local businesses, aiming to boost tourism and local economy by offering immersive experiences in a historic area among the most charming in the Americas, highlighting its unique heritage and vibrant atmosphere.
