Malawi has established a Joint Technical Committee with Zambia to boost cross - border tourism. Driven by destination marketing and regional infrastructure development, the partnership between the two African countries streamlines travel across their shared border to attract more international visitors and drive economic growth.
The initiative came following a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of Africa Travel Indaba 2026 which took place in Durban, South Africa, where talks between Malawi’s Principal Secretary for Tourism Jeanie Mnyenyembe and Zambia’s Permanent Secretary for Tourism Evans Muhanga, centred on destination marketing, regional promotion, investment opportunities and the development of cross - border tourism products aimed at increasing visitor numbers and economic returns across the region.
The Joint Technical Committee will serve as a formal platform for coordinating joint marketing efforts, increasing joint participation in international fairs and exhibitions,, focusising on developing shared, multi - destination cross - border tourism packages that highlight the countries mutual cultural and natural heritage.
The two nations are working together to improve transport connectivity, streamline customs, and ease overall border friction for tourists moving between the two African countries.
The initiative is designed to advance the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) vision of seamless regional integration, knowledge sharing, and increased investment.
Officials from both countries emphasized the strategic value of regional integration, with Malawi’s Principal Secretary for Tourism described the agreement as timely in advancing regional tourism integration and Zambia’s Permanent Secretry for Tourism noting that closer cooperation would help position Southern Africa as a competitive global destination.
