The local history is extremely interesting very similar to that of the nearest Italian region, Lombardy.

Originally populated by Celtic tribes  such as the Insubres and Ligurians they were assimilated during the Imperial campaign of colonisation by the Romans who elevated in the current boundaries a fortress from which had origin the name of the of the municipality deriving from Castellano, a denomination which translated means Castellan closely  linked to the presence of a former castle.

In the 5th century that land suffered several invasions from populations coming from north among them the Lombards who since the 6th century established their influence in that geographic area with their first King Alboin before to be replaced by the Franks in the 8th century, a civilisation which starts with the Carolingian dynasties a long rule incorporating that land in the Holy Roman Empire.

Those rulers left in inheritance domains with a marked  territorial subdivision, a defined defencive system, well established trades and productive activities but also a pretty rigid feudalistic regime favouring the high social class.

In medieval times the village was a stronghold of the powerful Visconti and Sforza families, Lords of the Duchy Milan who gave the locals protection during the times of the eternal, historic rivalry against the city of Como secular rival of those Milanese aristocrats with events highlighted by a multitude of disputes with harsh clashes transformed in a war endured ten years which saw those two contenders trying to rule the local territory for a very long time.

In 1450 by military operations led Francesco Sforza, first Duke of the dynasty transformed the former Castellano in a defencive base with a numerous presence of soldiers but the fall of of those Italic House in the early 16th century generated the incorporation of that municipality in the city of Lugano joining the Helvetian Confederation.

An important battle which determined the victory of the Swiss League and the capitulation of tha influential Duchy took place in Torrazza, a present municipal neighbourhood.

After that event the town became officially part of the current Italian speaking Canton which was officially established in 1803 following all the historic stages of Switzerland since then until present days.

The centre of the town is mainly developed behind its captivating lakeside promenade and Piazza Lago, a charming square with in its immediate proximity the Tourism Office while Via Meriggi consists in the coastal road leading to the Museo della Pesca, the Fishing Museum, with a splendid waterfront flanking the historic municipal core.

Not from the local coastline starts Via Stazione one of the most important arteries  crossing the centre from north to south connecting the area in proximity of the lake to the northern boundaries of the municipality until Via Colombera, a street linked to Via Cantonale an important axis directly leading to the outskirts of Lugano.

The popularity of that centre apart its fascination is also closely related to that productive activity previously mentioned that emblematic product named chocolate, a pride  with a secular tradition in Switzerland  famous worldwide and that town increased the fame of that country hosting since 1957 the famed factory Alprose SA where you can start your visit.

An old strategy of marketing which works very well after many years or better since the beginning of the history.

All that naturally is combined with concrete plans, targeted projects, defined promotions, working as sponsor or aimed to the merchandising, including inviting people in Educational which is another theme linked to that incredible achievement, all them are important complements to attract new customers who can discover all that and more.

The town is not only museums and nature but it also boasts relevant historic monuments and one of them is the Chiesa Santa Maria del Rosario, the Church of St. Mary of the Rosary situated in the Magliasina quarter.

That Religious building erected in the 16th century is a splendid example of Baroque art in the Canton of Ticino, the original construction was probably in Renaissance style but it was later arranged after some restorations with a change of aspect transformed in the 17th and 18th centuries in that one visible nowadays.

Notable are some architectural elements in its exterior layout as beautiful arcades forming a marvellous portico where is situated a fine rectangular wooden portal consisting in the main access to the interior and you will notice on the top a refined, decorated pediment integrated next to a scenic gable roof.

That sacred structure was enlarged in different periods especially in the early 18th century it had different operations, the facade was partially re-arranged keeping despite that some lines of the original desig, .other works took place between 1721 and 1739 with the addition of a choir, the restorations of the vaults and the apse and also the current bell tower was added in that period.

In the same neighbourhood you can see another Religious construction situated very close of that Church, the Cappella di Santa Maria, a small medieval shrine erected in 1442 dedicated to St. Mary with some final arrangements in the 16th century which gave it a Renaissance image.

Its historic value has a particular relevance because it was since a long time ago a very famous destination of pilgrimages also for that inserted in the historic patrimony of the Canton of Ticino.

The Parish Church of the municipality is the Chiesa di San Cristoforo dedicated to St. Christopher erected in 1352 in Romanesque style but according to historic documentations the structure you can see nowadays probably used the foundations and some elements of a former Ecclesiastic construction previously established in that place.

Many medieval Churches in ther Canton Ticino just like that one were mainly remodelled by artists aimed to save the old buildings after restorations with works of preservation using different techniques which gave a new image to several historic monuments.

That Church is one of the living example of adopted Baroque style in vogue in the period of its elevation including in the Imperial Courts often used to replace or modify the image of many Religious sites for reasons of deterioration or in some cases to turn page with new cycles as happened in other parts of Switzerland with strong influences coming from the nearest Austria and Italy.

Along it you can admire Villa Ferretti, a further splendid attraction consisting in an elegant stylish Neoclassical but at the same time eclectic mansion elevated in the early 20th century also highlighted by some fine Baroque details with a scenic roof surmounted by a green copper spire.

The presence of that fascinating construction built between 1903 and 1904 by the architect Henri Fivaz characterised by a superb, fine architectural layout with a wonderful mixture of different elements make that building a notable masterpiece.

The former name was Villa Mainini because it was occupied by Luigi Mainini while the present was taken by the last owner a lady called Luciana Ferretti.
