Tivat-Montenegro | Sparkling Beaches and a Renowned Luxury Marina.

Tivat is a very trendy resort of Montenegro, characterised by its sparkling beaches and a renowned luxury marina, that Yacht harbour called Porto Montenegro which is today one of the most famous attractions on the entire Eastern Adriatic coast.

That seaside town in the wonderful Bay of Kotor boasts a very strategic and important geographic position just 78,0 km from the jewel of Croatian coast Dubrovnik,(I wrote a post about that superb place) very close to Budva,Kotor and Herceg Novi and located  87,0 km from the capital of Montenegro Podgorica the former Titograd.

With its approximately 15,000 inhabitants the municipal territory of Tivat consists in a group of 11 villages, such as Gosici,Donja Lastva,Durasevici, Krasici, Lepetani, Mrcevac, gornja Lastva, Milovici, Bogdasici,Boglisici,Milovici,Radovici and the town of Tivat which has its airport and port.

In the last years thanks to some foreign investments the reality of that resort and its riviera significantly changed. The beaches of all the neighbourhoods are a splendid attraction for tourists and all linked to offer several chances to practise several activities such as sailing, diving, fishing, water skiing, paragliding and much more.

Thanks to that unique location position with its centre developed in a magnificent point of that bay and its local coast along which runs along Seljanovo,Racica and the Cape of Pakovo. The current town was for centuries a  desire of conquest of many civilisations,Empires and Kingdoms an outstanding place to organise maritime operations, trade, commerce and to have a base unique and with no equals.

That resort is also as an open gate to the the small Krtoli Archipelago formed by the islands of St,Mark,Island of Flowers and Lady of the Mercy with an extension until the Lustica Peninsula at the door of Herceg Novi, the former Venetian Castelnuovo and protected by the mountain Vrmac and the hills of Popova Glava and Velji Vrh all that made Tivat the right place to create there an impenetrable stronghold.

It is not a case the Marine Republic of Venice developed around that centre which was called by those old rulers which were able to fight against the huge Ottoman Empire from the 15th to 18th century in that bay one of the most hermetic defencive systems along the Dalmatian coast.

The coast of Montenegro has always been for its formation a paradise for lovers of wild landscapes, skippers and people fond about to discover unexplored small bays and coves.Tivat offers all that including its architecture reminiscent the ancient rules, with splendid Venetian palaces and houses mixed with Orthodox-Byzantine churches and a mild Mediterranean climate invite to choose that resort and and all the area of Bay of Kotor as a very special holiday destination.

Another important aspect is the constant presence of the Blue Flag on its beaches which are totally healthy, with crystalline and clear waters and many of them very peaceful, with a wild and virgin aspect, all that is the essence of those magnificent Montenegrin coasts.

The history of that Montenegrin is rich of events due the relevant civilisations who populated in its long history its territory.According Archaeological founds after excavations determined that the area was inhabited since prehistoric time.

The first settlers were the Greeks and in more or less the same period also came Illyrian population and the current name apparently derives from the name of an Ilyrians Queen called Teute who chose the current area of Tivat as summer residence, enchanted by the beauty in the surroundings of the town nearest Topljansko-Novy Bay,where is situated the maritime picturesque village of Risan (I wrote a post about that resort) actually part of the municipality of Herceg Novi and that Queen ordered to build a luxury residence not far from Donja Lastva, one of the villages of Tivat.

Other versions about the name are linked to religious themes as the name of St,Theodotus while another remote opinion is an ancient Celt name,Touto meaning settlement, small town. The Romans made of that resort a major landing point connected with the Italic Adriatic coast.About Hellenic and Roman civilisations were found many relevant rests such as some ancient Greek objects and Roman tombs in the area of Donja Lastva.

All that explains the importance of the area chose by those settlers during its chronological historical steps. Byzantines and later Slavic populations also settled there and in Medieval era the current town and Montenegro were ruled by the Zeta Dinasty and later by local aristocratic families from Dobrota,Kotor and Prcanj more some others nobles of Venetian-Dalmatian heritage settled in the nearest coastline.

The advent of the Marine Republic of Venice and those noble families built on the territory elegant mansions, houses and residences and the main activity became the maritime trade and Tivat was  historically incorporated in the Venetian Republic in 1420.The Dogi of Venice built a impenetrable fortified system around the town and the port,a town where also many Serbs found refuge escaping from the devastated lands occupied by the Ottomans hosted and protected by the Venetians during the Turkish domination in a vast area of the Balkans.

With the support of the local Montenegrin noble families, the town had an important development receiving the title of  loyal town and the Venetian name Teodo and integrated by the Venetians in a sort of county named Albania Veneta.

That Venetian colony kept strong contacts with the motherland on the shores of the romantic lagoon. The decline of Venice and the fall of the Marine Republic in 1797 was not a happy period for Tivat.Although the historical rival the Ottoman Empire lost consistence due several defeats against Austria in the Balkan Area and Montenegro although had a certain autonomy was practically under Turkish influence.

That period was the era of the Vladica, with the dynasty of the Petrovic Njegus, nobles families linked to the Orthodox Church but paying a sort of tribute in taxes and goods to the Ottoman Empire in change of a sort of treaty of no aggression. That dynasty later kept only the politic government, renouncing to the religious powers gave the Orthodox Church and the Petrovic Njegus became the Kniaz, the princes of Montenegro.

The 19th century generated the Montenegrin-Turkish war, with a historic resistance of the Montenegrin to the Turkish attacks. The mountains around Tivat were strenuously defended with courage and many areas were reconquered by the locals village by village.

The year 1878,was a historic date for Tivat and the country, when in the Berlin Congress,Montenegro obtained its Independence.Although independent,Tivat was occupied by Austria in the year 1899 and the Hapsburg established there an arsenal on the port, later used by the former Yugoslavian Navy Army as headquarter after the 2nd Word War.

From 1905 to 1913,Montenegro and Tivat had important and intense years of their history, the country established an Official Constitution, there was in 1910 the proclamation of Nikola Petrovic Njegus as King of Montenegro and Tivat started to be an important naval base. In  the year1913,after centuries Montenegro embraced once again the Italic culture, with the marriage between the future King of Italy, the Prince Victor Emmanuel III of Savoy and the Princess Elena of Montenegro.

The two kingdoms started a strong relationship, since 1918 when after the 1st World War Montenegro joined the Kingdom of Serbian,Croatian and Slovenian ,not very welcome for many  inhabitants (including many from Tivat) loyal to their King Nikola.

Only one year later Montenegro declared war to the Kingdom of Serbia before to fall in 1924.During the 2nd World War Montenegro and Tivat were occupied by Italian troops,it was established a sort of Italian Protectorate, the rule of the country was given Queen Elena wife of  King Victor Emanuel of Savoy. After the 2nd war Montenegro became part of the former Republic of Yugoslavia,In that period under Tito rule and the town changed its aspect,it was mainly used as military port, shipyard centre, ferry activities with a maritime station connected to  the town to Herceg Novi,

The old banks were replaced by many cemented platforms built around the harbour and the tourism was mainly active for locals coming from the nearest villages and from the interior,in the course of that period the local coastline also became a base of maintenance for military boats and submarines. The history of Tivat will continue linked to that of the dissolution of the Yugoslavia and in the year 2006 as part of the new independent Republic of Montenegro.

The centre of Tivat is situated at the foot of the mount Vrmac which majestic appearance is just like a giant protecting the town in front of  Boka Kotorska with its port, its marina and its centre which is formed by an  agglomeration of houses facing the sea, behind Ulica Marsala Tita,a coastal boulevard which embraces further north Ulica Arsenalska another avenue along the coast leading to Porto Montenegro.

Ulica 21 Novembra is a long boulevard which crosses the centre and it is the main artery linking the local coastline to Jadranska Magistrala the coastal road situated east of the centre, another important axis is Ulica Palih Boraca enclosed between two parks such as Park Na Tigu and Mali Diecji Park while Ulica Njegoseva very close is the main road linking the centre to the promontory of Pakovo where is situated a splendid bay, just 400,0 metres from the centre.

In that area there are some buildings which remind the Venetian period, undoubtedly the most important is the house which was residence of the famous a noble Venetian -Dalmatian family Buca,a fortified mansion mansion, with an impressive  stoned tower built in the 15th century.

It is a splendid example of Renaissance architecture, considered among the best for its fine details in all the Montenegro, the building is surrounded by a splendid garden and today it contains a museum and cultural centre. There are in proximity of that building  two churches,Sveti Mihovil, family, and Sveti Sava,a modern church completed in 1967.

One of the highlights is obviously Porto Montenegro, which is situated pretty close to the centre, centre, further north at the end of Ulica Arsenalska flanked by the huge green lung of Tivat Veliki Gradski Park a splendid place to enjoy a walk in a paradise with a rich vegetation and species of Mediterranean plants.

That magnificent creation by the Hungarian-Canadian businessman Peter Munk founder of the gold mining company Barrick Gold Corporation of Toronto and owner of the naval base of Tivat.A more than splendid marina with its luxury yacht port which is one of the most relevant symbols of the Adriatic coast.

The town has lived an increasing flow of tourism which is today one of the most important resources and thanks all that a brilliant consolidation, that complex was something to consolidate that important escalation of a resort which has an intense demand to enjoy  the beautiful coasts of Montenegro.

New ideas ideas and further future projects by some investors are to develop a marina which can compete in some years with the most important European Yachts destinations, the dream is to create in Tivat a sort of new Portofino,Monaco or St.Tropez, hosting luxury yachts and creating a VIPs tourism movement launching Tivat as a Top and a high Class destination.

That Marina offers approximately 185 berths, the project is to develop it with a capacity of over 600 berths hosting yachts of 150 metres, there are in the complex shops, boutiques, restaurants, luxury apartments and residences,a gem of architecture and class there is also a project to establish a 18 hole Golf Course.

Just 4,5 km from the centre close to Lustica Peninsula there is the Aerodrom Tivat, the local airport,
built in the year 1971 and located  plain of Grbalj  Dolina, the valley and rural area of the town,,

It provides several domestic flights but also Internationals with relevant destinations such as Munich, Berlin,Belgrade,Frankfurt, Moskow, St.Petersburg, Brussels,London and Rome among others. In that area you can take the south exit of the town which connects the extra radius and Mrcevac Radovici and continuing in another direction until the famous resort of Budva.

The airport is also close to a coastal promontory facing Ostrvo Cvijica, the Island of the flowers.Ostrvo Cvijca is a very small island,an islet only 310,0 metres long and 200,0 metres wide connected to the inland by an isthmus and it hosts the ruins of the monastery once inhabited by some monks which was destroyed in 1441 by Venetian soldiers, due a plague on the island.

The name of that Monastery is Sveti Arkandel Mihailo Manastir, built in medieval era in 1219 by St.Sava Nemanijc and dedicated to St,Michael the Archangel. That Religious construction has a relevant importance for the history of Montenegro,it was the residence of the Zeta Dynasty the most important local Slavic Orthodox Dynasty who created the history of the Republic of Montenegro and considered the Montenegrin ancestral fathers of the local inhabitants.

Facing that island there is another one,the famous Stradioti also called also Otok Sveti Marko, the island of St.Mark, which is definitely one of the most picturesque highlights in area of Tivat. That small island was also famous some years ago to be base of a village managed by the famed and famous French Tour Operator Club Mediterranée specialised in tourist villages all inclusive and resort holidays in beautiful Mediterranean areas.

That island has always had according legends and reality a warrior past, the name Stradioti derives from Statiotes, meaning soldier. The Stradioti were those Greek soldiers incorporated in the Venetian Army who fought on that island against the Turkish invasions, while the Slavic name Sveti Marko Otok, means Island of St,Mark in honour of St,Mark,Saint Patron of Venice.

On that island the Venetian Officers placed the artillery by order of the Dogi to protect the coastline of Tivat and Durasevici by the attacks of the Ottoman fleet and the Stradioti were a sort of special corp of Infantry and Artillery based on that island.

The other island of the Krtoli Archipelago is Otok Gospe, the Island of the Lady of Mercy. That small island is situated halfway between the other two,it was the residence of the Bishops of Kotor until the 19th century, more or less the period of the Independence of Montenegro from the Ottoman Empire.

The Convent on Otok Gospe you can see there is dedicated to the Virgin and it occupies a big part of the surface also famous  for the devoted wooden statue depicting the Virgin located in the fond of that religious building.

South-West of the Airport and the islands in a small bay you can reach Solila Posebni Specjalni Rezervat Priride,a special protect nature reserve with many species of birds and  in particular famous for the presence of flamingos which find in that area protected by winds and rich of fish an ideal natural habitat.

There are many other species of  birds as cormorants, the visit of that fauna bird sanctuary is a mecca for all the photographers and fond about different rare species. Thanks to the great and relevant fauna value,
Montenegro Institutions hope that area will be soon an important ornithological reserve of international importance.

A short distance from the Natural Reserve in direction of Radovici, you will meet the village of Tripovici with a beautiful view of the coast and the islands of Stradioti and Ostrvo Cvijca and on a hill towards the western coast of Boka Kotorska, there is Crkva Sveti Antune Padovanski, a Church dating back 18th century dedicated to St.Anthony of Padua.

That temple has a Baroque aspect, inside there are some paintings of Italian school  depicting the Saints Peter and Paul probably works by Venetian artists and an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Rosary.

In that area all the villages are located very close each other and Bogisici is another one.Walking in that tiny hamlet you can breathe a very peaceful atmosphere and also there there are very interesting places and part of the history of Tivat as Crkva Sveti Ivan,a medieval Church dedicated to St,John erected probably in the 14th century with a splendid restored bell tower with a big clock.

It contains some interesting ancient frescoes and in the past it was used by Christian Catholic and Orthodox priests,to show the excellent harmony and tolerance in Montenegro during the pleasant past under Venice rule.

Radovici is another village starting after a curve in direction Plavi Horizont, next to the Sport Centre Radovici Klub,it is a very nice place, halfway between the the beach facing the Krtoli Archipelago and the other coast with the bays of Dobra Lika and Zaliva Traste.

In a splendid Mediterranean environment, you can see another Baroque Church dating back the 19th century, probably rebuilt over a previous dated 16th century. The highlight of that Orthodox temple is the high bell tower dominating the beautiful landscapes of that rural area and the coasts.

The nearest village of Gosici was in the past a Greek and Illyrian settlement,on that land was built in the 14th century the Church-Monastery Crkva Sveti Luka, dedicated to St,Luke and used by Benedictines monks during the Venetian Republic period. The building was in different occasion restored and embellished by paintings, new decorative details, the highlight is undoubtedly a donation by the Kneiz Petar I of the Dynasty Petrovic Njegus first local governors of Montenegro,a felon with a splendid golden embroidery.

Continuing on the south side of Tivat you can reach of Plavi Horizont, that name means Blue Horizon, a place famous for a beach which is an authentic paradise. The environment is simply wonderful, a beautiful beach inside of the Bay of Kotor with crystalline waters and a splendid Mediterranean vegetation with maritime pines, olives groves and a splendid horizon.(for that the name). The place is a must  to admire one of best beaches not only of Montenegro but of all Adriatic Sea.

Coming back towards Tivat Airport area, you can take a road called Mitrovina leading on the hills over the town, where you can see the village of Bogdasici which hosts an old Monastery, dating back 13th century called Crkva Sveti Petar and dedicated to St,Peter.

It was as that one of Gosici mentioned before a Benedictine Monastery, the relevant value of that religious building is an engrave in old Slavic language corresponding to the first Slavic settlers of the area,in the famous period of the Zeta, rulers of Montenegro and another highlight is some frescoes, painted in the same century of its construction.

The village of Gornja Lastva is located north to  the centre of Tivat on the slopes of the Vrmac mountain. It is a small agglomeration dating back medieval times ,an oasis of peace with a splendid view over Boka Kotorska.

It is one of those classical place where the time seems to have stopped with its picturesque old houses and the charming small medieval Church dating back 15th century Crkva Sveta Marija dedicated to the Virgin Mary.Crkva Sveti Vid,is another Church situated over the village, the date of construction is uncertain, probably built in the 14th century and its shape has a strong and clear Byzantine inspiration.

On another hill of Tivat called Djurdjevo Brdo, which means Hill of St,George, there is a very tiny agglomeration of old houses and a  historic monument of the town,a Church dating back 9th century,Crvka Sveti Srdja,Nikola i Dimitrije, dedicated to the Saints Sergius,Niicholas and Demetrius. That Religious temple is not used for rites and mass but it is of course for its date of construction a relevant patrimony of Tivat.

About 2,5 km from the port in direction Airport,in a neighbourhood called Kaljmani there is Crkva Sveti Antune,a church dating back the medieval era probably the14th century.Dedicated to St,Anthony is particularly famous for the presence of beautiful frescoes of Venetian school unfortunately damaged by humidity.

Located, next to an elegant mansion, property of a noble family of Kotor, the walls of that Religious construction are covered by paintings representing the 14 Coat of Arms of the noble families of Kotor and on a vault of the bell tower you will notice an ancient inscription dating back 14th century with the name of the Monarch Tvrtko, the founder of the former Venetian town of Castelnuovo : Herceg Novi.

There are many beaches in Tivat to enjoy some on the islands of Stradioti,Ostrvo Cvjica, but also in Seljanovo,Krasici,Donja Lastva,Zupa,Lepetani and Opatovo. One of the most beautiful for position and quality of the waters and I strongly recommend is the beach of Plavi Horizont I mentioned before but all them have a very special charm and what it capture is also the difference between one and another, for length, width and position.

The great quality of those sparkling and virgin beaches of Montenegro is due to the excellent quality of the waters and much more the natural environment, the landscapes and all what there is around, vegetation vegetation, viewpoints, wild tips, coves and bays are absolutely a ll them are a fantastic frame enjoying turquoise and clean waters simply wonderful.

The major part of them are pebbled beach what is more fascinating are the colours, contrast of lights and the Dinaric Alps immediately behind, all is a sort of dreamland and the result of all that is why many artists and prominent people of different countries as Jules Verne,Vuk Karadzic,Laza Kostic, the King Victor Emmanuel of Savoy,Ugo Foscolo,Pierre Loti to mention some of a very long list fall in love with Tivat for all that spending lovely stays and returning often there.

.As in other Slavic countries you can enjoy an  excellent Sarma that plate made by cabbage leaves filled with meat, rice, including fish and spices to give more flavour to that popular speciality.Seafood and the grilled fish in Tivat are among the best you can eat in Montenegro, such as mussels, prawns, clams, squid and octopus. The Brodet Nad Brodetima is a classic plate of the Bay of Kotor a soup of sardine with stock, pepper, salt, salt, adding garlic and spices.

Excellent is the Njeguski Prsut a traditional ham from Montenegro and the famous Burek,a fried pastry filled by meat,or cheese or also vegetables, often present as starters or appetisers are also the local olives Barska Zutica,a special kind of olives with a very aromatic flavour also excellent to produce a savoury olive oil,

Notable is a  wide variety of fresh cheeses and excellent wines such as Krstac,Vranac,Pro Corde local Merlot,Cabernet and Chardonnay. The Montenegrin wines are definitely of high quality, the local hills with theit vineyards produce grapes of notable quality, smooth wines which collect the sun, mild temperatures for a long period of the year and the breezes of the Adriatic and the Dinaric Alps.

Cultivated on a soil which is ideal for the those grapes mentioned, the local wines are characterised by a very aromatic flavour, similar in particular in the reds to the wines of Apulia, robust and palatable with body and a perfect colour.Other drinks are the Niksicko Pivo a local good beer and there is  also an excellent selection of brandies such as Loza,Kruna and Prvjenac among others.
