Dubai, city and emirate of the UAE, known for its ultra-modern architecture, luxury shopping and vibrant nightlife, stands out for its commitment to the environment thanks to the numerous initiatives and infrastructures that contribute to sustainable tourism and consolidating itself as a very important destination worldwide.
The change towards a more aware and environmentally friendly planet is essential and fundamental and the tourism sector also amplifies this resonance by promoting a more sustainable way of traveling with various important initiatives that have been underway for some years now.
In line with these objectives, Dubai consolidates itself as a global tourist destination and reference point with incredible progress and improvements that have generated impressive results in a short time, leading the pace towards sustainable tourism in its own way.
DET the Department of Tourism Economics of Dubai has decided to develop the initiative called DST, Dubai Sustainable Tourism to position the city - emirate as an avant-garde tourist destination and support the tourism industry to effectively achieve its sustainability goals.
"Dubai Can", a well-known innovative initiative that emerged in 2022 as a true reflection of Dubai's great ambitions, efforts and commitment to transforming itself into a leading city in sustainability by promoting a culture of conscious consumption, has generated very positive effects.
One of its key actions "Refill for life Spanish" promotes the use of reusable water bottles to avoid excessive consumption of plastic both publicly and privately and in just two years more than 18 million bottles with a capacity of 500 ml have been eliminated from use in a single use.
The public space has incorporated 50 water fountains established in key places such as shopping malls, parks, beaches and other 30 are expected to be installed by the end of 2024 with private companies supporting this measure by incorporating fountains into their environments to promote more sustainable behaviors.
Dubai Reef is another innovative action launched in December 2023, focused on city's maritime conservation plans becoming the largest coral reef project in the world, an initiative that marks a milestone in Dubai's efforts to promote ecological sustainability.
It is expected that over the next four years, 20,000 coral reef modules of different sizes will be deployed in the waters of the city-emirate for a total of 600 square kilometers with a volume of over 400,000 cubic meters.
This initiative has the primary objective of improving biodiversity and safeguarding marine and coastal habitats by improving the resilience of the ecosystem and consequently significantly reducing carbon emissions.
In this case, fish stocks will increase, much more sustainable fishing will be promoted and another goal will be contributed to in relation to the contribution of the National Food Strategy 2051.
Sustainable Tourism Dubai works closely with the private sector to ensure and implement sustainable measures at the forefront of the tourism sector and in relation to this issue in 2021 has imposed that all urban hotels are regulated by 19 sustainability requirements ranging from sustainable maintenance strategies to corporate social responsibility programs.
To ensure compliance with these requirements, Dubai's Department of Economics and Tourism has a carbon calculator that can measure the carbon footprint very effectively and accurately.
Alongside this meter there are other useful and optimal tools such as the Analytical Reports of the emissions of hotels that measure the sustainability performance of hospitality facilities.
As a sort of incentive to reward the efforts of hotel companies, DET in partnership with the hotel industry has introduced the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Seal which recognizes the hotels that most adhere to the 19 sustainability requirements stipulated through three categories classified with the symbols gold, silver and bronze.
In this way, the commitment of hotels to promote a more sustainable future is publicly recognized by motivating and incentivizing the tourism sector to achieve its sustainability goals and linked to all this the positive results have been seen, with the awarding of 70 different hotels.
The gold level has been achieved by 5 star hotels such as the Al Jaddaf Rotana Suite Hotel located between the old and new Dubai famous for its five internationally renowned hotels and characterized by its haute cuisine, the Grosvenor House located in the famous marina of the emirate offering exclusive and luxury services with access to the private beach of Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort.
A further one is the Sofitel Dubai La Palma, very elegant resort with strong French influence located on the seafront of the iconic Palm Jumeirah, well known for being surrounded by lush vegetation and with easy access to the lively area of Dubai.
Over the past decade, Dubai has emerged as a global leader in sustainable development and innovation in the field of clean energy.
By 2050, the United Arab Emirates plans to use 100% clean sources, significantly reducing carbon emissions, and a clear example of this goal was the construction of the largest clean energy park in the world, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoun Solar Park, one of the most innovative in the world, which can boast the highest solar energy tower in the world with its 262.44 meters and a thermal accumulation of 15 hours.
In this plant, possible uses of hydrogen for various sectors such as industrial uses and mobility are also being researched.
The Department of Economy and Tourism also works with non-governmental agencies or private sector companies to achieve important sustainable goals such as the EEG programme, reforestation with the Emirates Environment Group.
From this initiative, more than two million trees were planted in 2007, neutralizing 12,467 tons of CO2 emissions per year, which is equivalent to taking 2,657 cars off the road in one year.
The Intelak initiative welcomes mentors, specialists, professionals, entrepreneurs and designers with the primary objective of building in partnership an innovative ecosystem that redefines the structural future of travel, tourism and aviation in the Middle East and globally.
One of the main objectives is to find essential solutions for the efficient use of resources, which includes the optimization of air routes to save fuel,
In the paradigm of the Dubai Urban Strategy 2024, the emirate also focuses on the planned improvement and construction of modern infrastructure and avant-garde in sustainability.
The Hotel with its innovative sustainable design Siro One Za'abeel has become a symbol in the urban skyline and one of the most exclusive and sophisticated options in the heart of Dubai.
Among the measures it has adopted to become an important point of reference, mention should be made of the façade that surrounds the two towers and The Link, the cantilevered bridge selected for its sophisticated heat reduction engineering that minimizes the need for the use of air conditioning while providing natural light and consequently lower energy consumption, promoting health and well-being.
Other initiatives taken to reduce the carbon footprint include energy-efficient HVAC systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, LED lighting and automated electrical and lighting systems to significantly reduce operating costs and waste.
