Ecuador | Gastronomic Markets a New Tourist Product


Ecuador, beautiful country straddling the equator on the west coast of South America that offers a heterogeneous landscape that includes the Amazon jungle, the Andean highlands, a wonderful coastline, the idyllic Galápagos islands rich in wildlife and a historical and cultural heritage of relevance, has another resource of considerable attraction :  its gastronomic markets.

These markets are a highlight of the South American country, suggestive, colorful, diverse, warm, lively, crowded with a wide range of products have long been a great attraction for any visitor who reaches Ecuador.

These spaces are part of the local culture, the soul of the cities and smaller towns, vibrant and always ready to mark the rhythms of the daily life of its people, also moving the local economy with products that are always fresh and appetizing and have become a sort of magnet for tourism and for all lovers of the authentic.

The Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador, sensitive to all that and for the great desire to preserve this local heritage, is promoting a new initiative that has as its primary objective to transform the gastronomic markets of Ecuador into a tourist product with the priority that allows the preservation of the gastronomic heritage of the localities, highlighting them for their richness and diversity.  offering visitors unique culinary experiences.

This programme is part of the tourism strategy drawn up this year by Ecuador, which highlights among its priority points the enhancement and international promotion of the indigenous gastronomy of the country of the Four Worlds.

"El Mercado 24 de Mayo" in the canton of Otavalo in the province of Imbabura, due to its history, development and importance, was the first to be selected as a sort of standard-bearer within this initiative.

Inaugurated in 1900 and moved in 2016, this market today offers a modern and functional infrastructure hosting 846 traders, in its development area there are two large patios where it is possible to find and taste authentic culinary delights with about 130 traditional gastronomic products of the coast and much more.

Among these delights stand out the famous lamb broth, the well-known otovaleño chaulafán a type of filled rice, the tasty fritada, the hornado among others. All this represents a unique experience for the visitor coming into contact with culture and history and from the Ministry of Tourism comes a message that the gastronomic markets of Ecuador are waiting for international visitors giving a warm welcome.
