Nicaragua, Central American nation nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean well known for its dramatic landscapes with virgin beaches, dramatic terrain of lakes and volcanoes through its Government in collaboration with China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd company with activities consisting mainly of construction projects, engineering procurement, domestic and foreign investment and trade has recently started an ambitious project for the expansion and development of the Punta Huete Airport.
The airport located north of the capital Managua developed in the 80s will have an investment of $ 400.49 million with the local authorities who intend to transform the currently disused infrastructure for commercial operations into an international airport suitable as a hub for transport, logistics and international trade.
These remarkable ambitions include the development of a 3.600-meter-long runway that will surpass and downsize Managua's Augusto Cesar Sandino Airport which boasts a runway of 2.442 meters in length that is currently the only international gateway to Nicaragua and the only one to handle international operations located across the lake from Punta Huete.
The limitation on tourism and trade is undoubtedly a great motivation for the Punta Huete Airport project and the participation of the company CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd represents an opportunity for the Chinese group to add this airport development to its growing portfolio of infrastructure projects in Ibero-America with 21 countries in the region having joined the BRI until 2023 according to the Council on Foreign Relations.
The completion of this project is not expected before August 2029, at which time this new airport hub will have a capacity to serve 3.5 million passengers per year and will alleviate the pressures on the Augusto Cesar Sandino Airport in the capital Managua by expanding Nicaragua's international air connectivity aimed at increasing tourism and trade in the Central American country.
