Morocco, North African country in the Maghreb region, a nation with a great historical and cultural heritage bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that boasts artistic and architectural beauties in its imperial cities of immeasurable value, sets record in its incoming tourism with 14.6 million arrivals by 2024, surpassing the results of the whole of 2023 in 10 months.
This excellent performance was revealed by the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Solidarity Economy of Morocco Fatim - Zahra Ammor at a ceremony that included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ONMT, the Moroccan National Tourism Office and the Irish airline Ryanair for the launch from January 2025 of two new direct air routes connecting Dakhla, city in the territory of Western Sahara in Madrid and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
The Minister then commented that this exceptional performance was achieved thanks to the effective implementation of the tourism roadmap for the period 2023 – 2026, a project which aims to achieve a yearly growth of 10% with a target of 17.5 million tourist arrivals by 2026 and representing an increase of 19% compared to the same period in 2023.
The specific statistical data reflect 2.3 million more arrivals than the previous year, noting that this remarkable growth driven by international tourists, up 22% with an increase of 1.3 million and Moroccan expatriates, up 16% with an increase of 1.0 million.
The performance for October 2024 was particularly very good, welcoming 1.5 million tourists, an excellent increase of 30% compared to the same period in 2023.
With these extraordinary data, Morocco is affirming its position as a relevant international destination, underlining that the regions of the Kingdom offer a mosaic of unique experiences, which continue to amaze travelers from all over the world.
The constant development of Dakhla's tourist offer, city located in territory of Western Sahara in the region Dakhla - Oued Ed - Dahab on the so called Rio de Oro Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean which recorded 250.000 overnight stays last September with an increase of 26% and a hotel occupancy rate 40%, up 7% while concerning air traffic Dakhla recorded a 30% increase in air seats with an increase of 31.000 passengers in 2024.
The Minister focused on Dakhla and said that this destination welcomes three weekly flights from Paris, with one flight operated by Royal Air Maroc, two flights operated by Transavia and another two weekly flights from Las Palmas managed by Binter Canaria.
Starting from January 2025, two new direct air routes will also be operational connecting Dakhla to the Spanish capital Madrid and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands with two weekly frequencies.
These two new routes will add around 16.000 more seats, increasing capacity by 50%, and this represents an important step towards achieving the goal of four international air routes to Dakhla within two years.
