China | Set to Open in June World's Highest Bridge Will Cut Travel Time From One Hour to One Minute

China is set to open the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in June, a record - breaking structure spanning 3.2 kilometres across a massive canyon according to the Metro with an investment of a Rs 2200 Crore, about £216 million is a project will cut travel time from one hour to just one minute.

This suspension bridge representing a significant engineering feat is located in the Guizhou province, a mountainous territory in southwest China, part of an old eroded plateau, known for its traditional rural villages, inhabited by minority groups like the Dong and Miao, highlighted by a pristine nature and the stunning 74.0 metres - high Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Towering over 200 metres higher than the Parisian Eiffel Tower and weighing three times, its steel trusses weight about 22.000 metric tonnes, and were installed in just two months.

The bridge will have a total length of 2.890 metres, including a main span of 1.420 metres and it is supported by two main 262 - metres tall towers and is set to revolutionize local transportation.

The bridge crosses the Beipan River and it passes through the deep Huajing Canyon, upon completion it will be the world's highest bridge measuring 625 metres from the bridge deck to the bottom of the gorge and it will surpass the current highest bridge, the Duge Bridge, which cross the same river 200 kilometres upstream.

In addition according to the Metro, plans for living areas, a glass walkway and the "highest bungee jump" in the world have also been unveiled by planners.

Among the reasons for the construction of the bridge were the revitalization of a very rural region with a lack of infrastructures providing vital transportation links in this area and the promotion of tourism, with also the projected creation of a centre for the extreme sports at the bottom of the canyon.

Chinese politician Zhang Shenglin said that this super project spanning the "Earth crack" will showcase China's engineering capabilities and boost Guizhou's goal of becoming a world - class tourist destination.

Chief Engineer Li Zhao stated that witnessing my work become something tangible, watching the brisge grow day by day and finally stand tall above the canyon, gives me a profoynd sense of achievement and pride.
