Japanese tourism is experiencing a boom due to the yen weakness that has significantly impacted the tourism industry, boosting visitors numbers and spending making the Asiatic country more affordable and attractive for international travellers, generating outstanding tourism growth confirmed by over 10.5 million visitors recorded in Q1 2025.
The Japan National Tourism Organization reported record - breaking visitor numbers, noted that 3.497.600 international travellers visited the country in March 2025 alone, representing an increase of about 13.5% over the same period in 2024.
This record speaks for itself and not only for the continued weakness of yen, which has made travel more affordable than it has been years but also for the unique appeal of Japan and an outstanding offering in many segments and niches with an ample diversification of destinations providing travellers a large fan of options.
During the first three months of 2025, Japan received approximately 10.54 million visitors, indicating a rapid recovery from the pandemic period, and neighboring countries such as China, Taiwan and South Korea are among the main contributors.
Germany with 79.400 visitors is not far far behind. With a total of 48.100 visitors in March alone with an increase of almost 1.2% compared to March 2024, German tourism consolidated itself as a relevant market for Japan.
In economic terms, the brilliant trajectory of Japan as destination is evident, foreign spending from January through March 2025 reached approximately 2.27 trillion yen, about €13.9 billion marking a 28% increase over the previous year.
This extra cash had not just padded hotel and restaurant bills, but also spread into cultural sites, ships, and local transportation showing just how intertwined the tourism upswing has become with Japan’s broader economy.
The key comnected to this way of success is the weakness of the yen, in many cases the low - denomination of the Japanese currency has reduced lodging, dining, shopping and travel costs to unsurpassed levels, attracting a record number of visitors eager to enjoy Japan’s rich cultural and historical heritage, modern attractions and its unique scenic beauty.
Experts in the Japanese tourism sector expect that this trend will stick around, as the favorable and budget - friendly effect of the yen which is playing an important role consolidating Japan as a leading destination in East Asia.
Looking ahead, rather than just making a recovery, Japan’s tourism landscape is thriving, thanks to smart strategies that draw in international visitors and the ongoing benefit of weak yen.
The fact that millions can stream through the country in just one month is a testament to its lasting charm and attractiveness, and in most cases, the outlook suggests the tourism industry’s growth will persist, bringing even more benefits to the economy in the months to come.
