Scandic Hotels, a renowned Swedish hotel chain based in Stockholm, founded in 1963 as Esso Motor Hotel announced plans for a new hotel in the ski resort of Sälen in western Sweden near the Norwegian border.
The property set to open for the 2026/2027 winter season is being developed in partnership with property owner Lima Besparingsskog and it will be strategically located between Tandådalen and Hundfjället, offering easy access to both family - friendly slopes and steeper runs during the decades.
Sälen is well known for its huge ski area, made up of several resorts and offering a range of slopes and several attractions like the Vasaloppsleden Trail which runs from Sälen to the town of Mora, and Sälen Aquarium boasting a flowing - water environment with fish varieties including rainbow trout.
In addition, the village is also a launch point for the southern section of the long distance Kungsleden Trail and over the past decade is a destination with an increasing popularity for summer activities such as hiking and cycling, making the hotel a year – round destination.
This location choice aligns with Scandic's strategy to enhance its footprint in Nordic countries by tapping into popular and high-demand destinations as Sälen, recognised as one Scandionavia's largest winter sports hubs attracting every year a mix of Swedish, Nordic, and international visitors.
The hotel currently under development, will feature 120 rooms and 16 apartments along with conferences facilities. The design will incorporate classic alpine elements with a wooden façade and balconies offering spectacular mountain views.
The ground floor will feature large windows to maximize natural light in the lobby, restaurant and bar areas, and multiple fireplaces are planned to create a very cosy ambiance.
As additional service a new skilift will facilitate easy transport from the hotel to the ski slopes, enhancing the guest experience.
Plans for the hotel also include a wellness area complete with a sauna, gym, and a pool that extends from indoors to outdoors.
Sustainability is a key focus for the hotel, which will operate under the Nordic Swan Ecolabel to ensure minimal environmental impact. This special certification reflects the hotel's commitment to using eco - labeled products and chemicals, utilizing 100% renewable electricity, reducing water consumption, and minimizing food waste.
