Scandic Hotels, a renowned hotel chain based in Stockholm, Sweden, founded in 1963 as Esso Motor Hotels, with its operations mainly in the Scandinavian market, a pioneer within sustainability is developing a new 138 - room hotel in Turku, Finland’s oldest city, located on the southwestern coast of the country at the mouth of the River Aura.
Turku, the regional capital of Southwest Finland is well known for its rich cultural heritage, business activities, particularly in the maritime and technology sectors, this lively centre is recognised as a significant destination and a gateway to the Finnish archipelago and well known as a hub for international cruise traffic as well as passenger and cargo traffic to and from Sweden.
This development is part of Scandic’s strategy to enhance its presence in the region, which is experiencing growth in business, cultural activities and tourism.
The new hotel will be created by converting part of the former Scandic Atrium building with the remaining portion will continue to undergo development. Renovations will start in August 2025 and the completion is expected in the second half of 2026.
The hotel will be part of the Scandic Go brand launched in 2020, focusing on urban, affordable, and sustainable hotels in city locations designed to be eco - friendly and offering intuitive self - service option, providing essential amenities at a great price.
The future establishment will be centrally located between Turku’s developed harbour and the University area, with proximity to the Market offering convenient access by city bus and bike to Turku’s main attractions and public transportation.
The establishment will feature 138 comfortable rooms, parking facilities and upon completion the new Scandic Go Hotel will bring Scandic’s total room count in Turku to 881.
The hotel will adhere to the Nordic Swan Ecolabel standards, which is the official environmental certification in the Nordic countries, reflecting the hotel commitment to using labelled products and chemicals, utilizing 100% renewable electricity, reducing water consumption, and minimizing food waste.
In addition to the Turku location, Scandic Hotels has plans to open more Scandic Go hotels in other Finnish cities including Oulu and the capital of the country, Helsinki.
This expansion is part of Scandic’s broader strategy to capitalize on increasing demand from both national and international guests in the Finnish market.
