Scandic Hotels a renowned Swedish hotel chain based in Stockholm, founded in 1963 as Esso Motor Hotels has entered into a long – term agreement with Vasakronan, a leading property company headquartered in Stockholm to develop a 236 - room hotel in Uppsala, famous city boasting a rich cultural and historical heritage located in the Uppsalslätten plain along the Fyrisån River which flows into the Ekoln Bay.
This centre is well known for its iconic University founded in the 15th century, its magnificent cathedral and the legacy of Carl Linnaeus, emblematic biologist and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature.
The project is set to begin construction in autumn 2025 with an anticipated opening in the second quarter of 2028.
The upcoming hotel will open its doors in Södra City, a new district in Uppsala that is being developed by the municipality and Vasakronan to extend Uppsala's city centre southward, an area will become a vibrant neighborhood with a focus on people, health, ideas and the companies of the future, planned to be completed by 2030 and will offer a mix of offices, workplaces, conferences, restaurants, local services, green spaces and space for recreation.
The future Scandic Hotel will be located on a central axis extending from Uppsala Central Station to the Fyrisån River, near Upssala University Hospital and Stadsträrden Park.
This strategic placement is expected to cater to both business and leisure travellers, enhancing the area's appeal for small meetings and larger events.
The property will feature 236 comfortable rooms, designed as a mixed - use building will combine hotel and office spaces, sharing common areas such as the lobby and entrance.
The ground floor is planned to feature a restaurant with a bar and outdoor seating, alongside a gym approximately 100 square metres in size, accessible to hotel guests.
The hotel will offer extensive meeting facilities, including seven meeting rooms, the largest one will have a capacity for up to 200 attendees and can be divided into three sections. This setup aims to support the city's demand for versatile event spaces.
Sustainability is a key focus of the development, with the building aiming for LEED certification at the platinum level, the highest level of achievement in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system.
In addition, there will be operations designed to meet the Nordic Swan Ecolabel standards to ensure minimal environmental impact, reflecting the hotel commitment to using eco - labeled products and chemicals, utilizing 100% renewable electricity, reducing water consumption, and minimizing food waste.
The hotel will join Scandic's existing portfolio in Uppsala, which includes Scandic Uppsala Nords and Scandic Uplandia, enhancing the brand presence in the region.
