Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly named and commonly referred to as Robin Hood Airport, was an international airport located in Finningley, a village and civil parish in the City of Doncaster, the second largest settlement in South Yorkshire, situated in the Don Valley on the western edge of the Humberhead Levels and east of the Pennines Hills, noted for its racing and railway history is a step closer to reopening.
The airport could potentially reopen in 2027 after South Yorkshire council leaders green light initial approved funding of nearly £160 million, however, the reopening will be for freight operations with passenger services relaunching in 2028.
The former air hub opened on 28th April 2005 was served predominantly by leisure airlines offering sunshine holiday flights was officially closed on 30th November 2022 because the previous owners, the Peel Group deemed it financially unviable.
However, following a public campaign and the approval of a funding package, South Yorkshire have secured the airport’s future and aim to reopen it.
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority granted the funding and this year, and Munich Airport International was announced as the preferred operator to manage the British airport.
Regional Mayor Oliver Coppard expressed his enthusiasm, but it is end end of the beginning, stating that is a load of work to do now to get the airport back up and running and to build that sustainable aviation and advanced manufacturing hub, adding that the reopening of the airport would generate about 5.000 jobs, and about £5 billion to the economy over time.
The official also said that it's essential to take in consideration what it contributes to economic growth, the ambitions, world class industries and broader opportunities with aviation.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated that this is a huge milestone for businesses and communities across South Yorkshire delivering better connections, creating future jobs and economic growth.
