Entebbe International Airport is undergoing a final phase of its $325 million (UGX 1.235 trillion) investment for its expansion to boost connectivity and to become a leading regional aviation hub.
Entebbe International Airport is located about 6 kilometres southwest of the town of Entebbe, a centre on a peninsula on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, approximately 40 kilometres by road south - west of the central business district of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, and the project goal’s is to transform Uganda’s main gateway into an efficient and modern air hub.
The upgrade included expanded terminals, a new 20.000 square metres terminal building is complete and expected to open soon and will feature 24 additional check - in counters, 12 - self check - in counters, and three new aero - bridges, increasing the total to five.
Runways have been resurfaced and strengthened to accommodate larger aircraft, new aircraft parking aprons have been built and a new cargo center has been completed to enhance the airport’s cargo handling capabilities.
The first phase, worth $200 million, has been completed, with the second phase underway at a cost of $125 million, following delays largely linked to the COVID - 19 pandemic.
While the new terminal, with its increased check - in counters and new aero - bridges, is nearing public opening, the expansion also involves enhancing airside areas to handle larger aircraft and restructuring the landside for traffic management.
In addition to terminal upgrades, the expansion will introduce a new airport entrance, enhanced traffic flow, and a proposed headquarters for Uganda Airlines. Once completed the airport is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and a smoother experience for both business and leisure travellers across the region.
Upon completion, the airport passenger - handling capacity is expected to rise from 2 million to 3.5 million passengers annually aimed to become a leading regional aviation hub and according to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, the project aligns with the country’s Vision 2040 strategy focused on infrastructure-led development.
