TAAG Angola Airlines, the national carrier of Angola founded in 1938 and wholly owned by the Angolan government started on 19 October the transfer of its flight operations to Luanda’s new Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport, informally Novo Aeroporto Internacional de Luanda and Aeroporto Internacional de Bom Jesus do Cuanza, located in the municipality of Bom Jesus do Cuanza in Icolo e Bengo Province, 40 km south - east of the Luanda city centre.
From the date, all departures and arrivals on routes to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos, Lisbon, Maputo, Nairobi, São Paulo, Windhoek, and seasonal services to Porto and Havana will operate exclusively from this airport inaugurated on 10th November 2023, the largest airport even constructed by any Chinese enterprise outside of China.
This air hub designed for 15 million passengers annually and 130.000 metric tons of cargo is intended to be Angola’s main gateway to the world and an important air hub for Africa will gradually replace the city’s existing Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, which will remain open for non - commercial air services, maintenance, and training.
Some services, including Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo are already using this new facility.
During the transition, TAAG Angola Airlines will run a shuttle between Quatro de Fevereiro Airport and Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport to support transit passengers connecting with airlines not yet based at the new hub, helping minimise disruption for international travellers.
