India | Inaugurated its First Hydrogen Highways to Drive Clean Mobility

India has inaugurated its first hydrogen highways, an initiative that represents a landmark step in advancing the country’s clean mobility agenda and accelerating the transition towards green hydrogen as reported by Indo Asian News Service (IANS), a renowned private Indian news agency.

This initiative, spearheaded by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, aims to reduce India’s crude oil dependency, enhancing long - haul clean mobility, and promoting a green hydrogen ecosystem.

The South Asian country initiated trials for hydrogen-powered freight vehicles on key routes, supported by the allocation of ₹500 crore and operations led by five industry consortium infrastructure development companies.

The works saw the deployment of 37 hydrogen trucks across 10 key national highway corridors with the introduction of nine planned refuelling stations established to support hydrogen - powered vehicles.

The plan includes to connect industrial hubs, ports, and relevant cities such as Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Visakhapatnam among others.

Officials emphasised that hydrogen is expected to play a central role in reducing India’s reliance on fossil fuels, cutting energy import costs, and paving the way for sustainable growth in the transport sector.

According to the source, by combining infrastructure development with policy support and international cooperation, India aims to position itself as a global leader in green hydrogen, with the hydrogen highways serving as a cornerstone of this transformation.

The launch is considered a major milestone in India’s journey towards green hydrogen and this move is expected to foster the development of a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem, covering regulatory frameworks, financing models and trade corridors.
