Thailand | To Launch a Cross - Border Tourist Train in Collaboration with Malaysia

Thailand’s railway authority has completed a cross - border trial run of its international tourist train in collaboration with Malaysia’s national railway operator.

The test, carried out between Sarat Than, a city in Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani, the capital of Surat Thani Province in southern Thailand, mainly known to tourists as the jumping - off point to Ko Samui, Ko Tao, and Ko Pha Ngan and to be a relevant commercial hub, with a seaport dealing in the main products of the province, coconuts and rubbers and  Padang Besar, a border town located in the northern part of the state of Perlis in Malaysia as well the northermost major centre in the country, famous for its bustling market, street food, affordable shopping, with a blend of Malaysian and Thai cultures, and a vibrant atmosphere.

This test marked a major step towards enhancing tourism and strengthening cultural, economic, and social ties between the two nations as reports Bernama, national news agency linked to the Malaysian government.

Both Thailand and Malaysia have committed to launching regular passenger services by December 2025 and according to Thailand’s railways authorities, the technical trial was conducted smoothly, with assessments covering key safety parameters such as platform clearance, wheel spacing, coach height, and braking systems.

The successful trial run has paved the way for the next phase of testing, including plans for a three - car train between the capital and largest city of Thailand, Bangkok and Butterworth, the city centre of Seberang Perai on the Malay Peninsula in the Malaysian state of Penang, a destination well known for a rich history, boasting temples, markets, colonial - era buildings, lush parks and serene beaches that offer a respite from urban life.

Officials noted that extending the cross - border service to Surat Thani will offer travellers a new and distinctive journey experience while boosting regional mobility, trade, and tourism.
