The Comoros a volcanic archipelago off Africa’s east coast, located in the warm Indian Ocean waters of the Mozambique Channel signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the civil aviation authorities od Saudi Arabia and Singapore during the 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which took place in Montreal, Canada.
The African archipelagic country is working to improve its air, maritime and digital connectivity to foster economic development and reduce isolation and the nation is focusing on establishing new international partnerships to strengthen its air connectivity.
In the Assembly the country also engaged in discussion to improve aviation regulations and technical capabilities, aligning with broader African participation aimed at amplifying the continent's influence within the ICAO.
In addition the country participated at the ICAO Innovation Fair, which showcased aviation technologies under the theme “Global Horizons : Inclusive Innovation for Aviation”, a panel addressing the critical need for timely development of policies and standards to support the rapid pace of innovation in the aviation sector.
Led by the Director General of the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Metereology (ANACM), Abdou Mondoha Abdillahi, the Comorian delegations see the established agreements as key to positioning the Indian Ocean Island nation as a regional tourism and trade hub through improved air connectivity.
In parallel, the delegation met the ICAO Regional Director for East Africa to advance discussions on greenhouse gas emissions reductions and regulatory improvements following their 2019 audit, with 63% of corrective actions reportedly implemented.
The ANACM also sought support to bolster technical capabilities, including flight crew certification and accident investigation.
