Zimbabwe | Undertaking a Major Airport Upgrade Program to Bolster Tourism and Investment

Zimbabwe is undertaking a major airport program to bolster tourism and investment, Transport Minister Felix Mhona, who spoke at the Africa Infrastructure and Built Environment Conference and Expo (AfriConfex)  which took place in Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and the largest centre in the country’s Matabeleland region outlined priority projects, including the expansion of Charles Prince Airport in Harare making it a relevant regional aviation hub and the development of new airports to improve connectivity and attracting tourism.

The African country is moving ahead with plans to modernise its air transport infrastructure, the government’s strategy builds on recent improvements, including the completion of a new terminal at Robert Mugabe International Airport in 2023.

The Minister of Transport noted that enhanced airport capacity has already led to growth in the aviation sector and stronger international interest, however, he emphasized the need for continued investment in sustainable infrastructure to support market access and broaden economic opportunities, particularly in under - served regions.

The future projects include :

•    Charles Prince Airport - This airport north of Harare with its expansion is set to be elevated to international status to accommodate large aircraft and generating high passenger traffic.

 •    New Mutare Airport - A completely new airport is planned for Mutare, the capital and largest city in the province Manicaland in the Eastern Highlands that will be developed by the same Chinese company that handled the upgrades at Harare and Victoria airports.

 •    Other airports - The government also plans to refurbish airports in Kariba, a town in northern Zimbabwe and a gateway to huge Lake Kariba, and Masvingo, a city in southeastern Zimbabwe and the capital of Masvingo Province.

The upgrade and expansion projects are part of a strategy to position Zimbabwe as a regional aviation and trade hub.

By improving airport capacity and accessibility, Zimbabwe aims to make it easier for international tourists to visit attractions attrctions like Victoria Falls and the development of special economic zones around major airports, starting with Harare, is intended to simulate economic growth and attract foreign investment.
