Egypt has showcased its new high - speed train to transform mobility in the country on November 10, 2025 in Cairo during TransNEA 2025, the region’s leading exhibition for transportation and logistics in the Middle East and Africa.
During this relevant event took place the official presentation of the Velaro high - speed train developed by the German technology giant Siemens that will deliver 41 trains of this type to the North African country.
Velaro high – speed train key features :
· Speed : Capable of reaching up to 250 km/h
· Climate adaption : Specifically designed to withstand Egypt’s desert environment with sealed exterior gaps, advanced filtration systems, and enhanced cooling to manage heat, sand, and dust.
· Aerodynamics : Optimized to reduce sand and dust buildup on key components through spoilers and aerodynamic measures.
· Capacity : An eight – car train that can carry 489 passengers, including 99 first – class seats. It also includes a restaurant carriage.
· Amenities : Features include onboard internet, power sockets, and real – time information displays.
· Connectivity : It will operate on a new 2.000 km, three – line high – speed network connecting 60 stations across the country, including Cairo and the new Administrative capital.
· Sustainability : Expected to cut travel times by up to 50% and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70% compared to cars and buses.
· Regional transport : The high – speed network will also be served by Desiro HC regional trains, which are adapted for the climate and have a top speed of 160 km/h.
On the same day, the Desiro HC regional train successfully completed its first train run on newly constructed tracks near the 6th of October Depot, west of Cairo.
The Desiro HC also developed by Siemens Mobility is a key element of Egypt’s new high - speed rail network with 94 trains set to provide efficient and comfortable regional transport. It features a unique combination of single - deck cars for high capacity, optimized passenger flow, and comfort.
Key features include an energy - efficient design with regenerative braking, a modern interior with features like WiFi and real - time information, spaciousness with multi - purpose areas, and flexible configuration options and is specially adapted for Egypt’s climate. Each train offers up to 849 passengers spaces and advanced features such as air conditioning.
With a top speed of 160 km/h, the Desiro HC fleet will play a vital role in connecting cities along the Green Line that is already referred to as the “Suez Canal on Rails”. This line consists of a 660 kilometres network connecting Cairo to Ain Sokhma, Alexandria, and Marsa Matrouh.
These achievements underscore Egypt’s bold vision to build one of the world’s largest high - speed rail networks and highlighting Siemens Mobility’s commitment to delivering fully integrated, sustainable transportation solutions tailored to Egypt’s unique environment.
Siemens Mobility’s 15 year maintenance commitment covers the entire railway equipments. It includes the fleet for Egypt’s new high - speed rail network ensuring long - term operational excellence.
The Egypt high - speed rail project with its three lines, will span over 2.000 kilometres and it will ultimately connect all the major cities and reaching nearly 90% of the population.
This network will bring people and communities closer together, cutting travel times by up 50% and will offer millions of passengers safer, more reliable, and more comfortable journeys.
Currently completed to over over 65% the first phase of Egypt’s Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh high - speed train is set to begin operations in 2027.
The 670 - kilometre line will include 21 stations and once completed all the operations, Egypt will have the sixth - largest high speed network in the world and significantly reducing travel times, cutting CO₂ emissions, and boosting sustainable local economic development.
